how does line of sight work with the new telescopes?

Recommended Posts

so in my rocket interior i put in 3 telescopes. one of them has LOS and two of them don't.

Since then, i've deconstructed the masterpieces and experimented with deconstructing/reconstructing the middle telescope at various points on the same level, and i still get the same thing - even built immediately to the right of the leftmost telescope which does have LOS, i don't seem to have any other construction spot up there to give me LOS (i haven't done every possible construction, but i tried a few). I also randomly tried to put it in my second level (with the compost) and still nada.

I can understand if all of them had no LOS or all did, but what characteristic of the left telescope gives it LOS and other ones not?

I think that the left one was built before you installed the solar panels, and it hasn't checked if it has line of sight since then. The others were most likely built after the solar panels, which blocked line of sight when they checked, which was when they were built.

Note: A solution to get line of sight for the other two would to be deconstruct the solar panels, build the telescopes, and then build the solar panels again.

From my tests, the telescope seems to require an unoccupied space with a view of the sky in the row of tiles directly above it for a distance of 5 tiles either direction of the upper left corner of the telescope.  You could get the rightmost telescope to work if you put it up against the side of the rocket.

If you remove a window tile from just above and to the right of the middle telescope, it should open line of sight for the other 2.I know this will throw off your beautiful design, but that's the breaks.

The old telescope was asymetrical. It required 5 tiles free to the left above it but only 2 or 3 to the right. Any gas and glass blocked los. The new probably uses the same requirement copy pasted.

From what i can see the leftmost telescope has a free tile 5 tiles from it`s left edge. It`s the edge of the map but seems to count as open space. The old telescope would work with minimal efficiency. The rightmost has a free tile 5 tiles to the right of it and if it works like the old one that doesn`t count as los for it. The middle one has glass above it and glass always blocked telescopes so it won`t work unless you remove tiles above it.

It is a buildable area so I think the telescope can have a line of sight if build on either edge. I had to drill through the roof in mine to have LoS... (my poor beach chairs had to be demolished... :-( ). I built every free space to the edge so I don't think I would get LoS if I put a telescope either left or right edge. I didn't want to demolish more walls/structures to find out (it took 90 cycles to build everything..)

Some experimenting was done on Brothgar's Discord, the rules seem to be:

  • They require an opening within 5 tiles of the top-leftmost tile of the telescope.
  • The bottom tile of the "column" can be blocked; but everything above that must be open.
  • Glass counts as opaque and blocks vision.
  • You can wrap it in opaque tiles and still have it function, as long as at least one column of tiles is open.

I'd sum the rules up as "funky".
See image for illustration, original screenshots by Discord user "tomylee", I just merged them and added the markers.

That looks just like the old telescope rules. Except the old one was losing like 7% efficiency per blocked tile while this one seems to work at full speed with just a single one open.
