Questions about Lord of the Fruit Flies and Flame Weed

Recommended Posts

Really enjoying the new update!! I have the majority of plants researched at Giant and its really fun trying to get unlock everything in the plant registry. I've also been going for the new super hard ornaments from Misery, Crab King etc and only have a couple to go.

What I really want to do is get that Friendly Fruit Fly to help automate my crops a bit, the wiki is a little confusing on how to actually get him to spawn saying that you need 15 rotting or full crops (?) on a single tile, is that single patch made by the garden rigmajig because if so I'm struggling to get more than 18 tilled holes across two connected tiles (three rows of 6) which means one tile potentially has 12 while the other has 6 but that's still miles away from 15 on a single tile.

I don't understand how to make him spawn and really want to fight him and achieve the friendly fruit fly, any advice would be fantastic!!

Also does the Flame Weed raise your temperature by a decent amount for a long time everytime you touch it? If so I might have to try and grow a patch of it in my base to warm myself in Winter constantly - seems like a decent addition to a base keeping you warm even longer no? Would this effect your thermal stone as well? Can someone explain how this works. Also are Tillweed Salves worth making at all? I've made the Forget me Lots Tea but as a Wigfrid main I can't partake anyway.

EDIT: Also why doesn't Lord of the Fruit Flies have an Ornament? Seems like a missed opportunity.

Got Lord of the Fruit Flies to spawn, it was when I had 18 fully grown crops across two farming tiles that were connected. This happened in the Oasis at Summer and I wasn't expecting it but he was easy to take down and I finally have a Friendly Fruit Fly to help with my crops (holy **** he is so helpful - no talking to every crop and no wasting valuable pan flutes/beef horns) at my main base.

I definitely did not have 15 crops across "one tile" by any means as I had 9 on each tile for a total of 18 across the two tiles. This must mean that his "one tile" requirement to spawn refers to one farm plot that can be clearly be bigger than a single tile - perhaps the wiki should be updated to be a bit clearer - hope this helps others out there!

I don't know the answer to all your questions, but fire nettles don't affect your thermal stone, but if you're wearing something like a beefalo hat then I think the heat would last a long time. Keep in mind it also deals damage to you (I don't remember how much). Also, you should consider using a one-man band to tend your crops instead of a pan flute or beefalo horn. It's much cheaper and lasts much longer.

Interesting, they do a little bit of damage but I main Wig and can always pop a helmet on before touching the fire nettle each time.

Thanks for the tip re one-man band, I actually don't use Beef Horns or Pan Flutes for gardening I literally was just talking to each plant before I got the Friendly Fruit Fly. Helpful though as that was SUPER time consuming and if at any point I can't use the Fly or he dies I'll try out the One-man Band approach, I think I dismissed that because the One-man Band is so average and situational to begin with and I don't have any stored away whereas I have plenty of Pan Flutes (especially thanks to Winters Feast - seriously I've received so many so far in presents) and Horns stored away in my base.

Definitely considering trying to get a little grove of permanent Fire Nettles set up - both for heating and decor - might be real hard considering its only possible via seeds at a 20% to get a weed and it needs to be the right weed..

Wiki says this about fire nettles: "A player that comes into contact with Fire Nettles receives 6 damage and their perceived temperature is increased by 60° for 1 minute, making the player subject to Overheating. Wormwood is immune to this effect."

Sounds like it's actually a viable heating source with insulating gear, 6 damage is really not that much. A grove of fire nettles would be very cool but I think you would only need one plant.

Yeah you'd only really need the one.. I might try to grow some with Forget me lots surrounding (they seem a lot easier to grow) them as a little base decoration.

Yeah one minute is pretty decent and if you're doing tasks in base anyway why not use them to keep heating yourself up.

Managed to grow another Fire Nettle (took a stupid amount of attempts) so now I just need to grow the rest of the grove....

I touched it a bunch of times in late Autumn just to mess around with it and see what happened and after touching it a few times I began overheating. Definitely seems like its going to be useful in Winter. I'll try to go without a Thermal Stone and use Winter Gear (not going to be fun but for science!) for most of the coming Winter and see how much the Nettle actually helps with temp control.

EDIT: I also messed around with Forget me Lots (which are so much easier to grow than other any weed - seriously I've seen two Fire Nettles, 1 of the one that attacks you with vines and no tillweeds at all whereas I've seen at least like 20 Forget me Lots so far) trying to set them up surrounding the Fire Nettle. For some reason I thought you could pick them then they would regrow their flowers after some time but you need to dig them out and wait for new ones to pop up if you want to farm them for tea - a little bit more tedious than I had hoped (especially considering I main Wig and can't even drink the tea anyway =P) I believe that still having a couple in your farm plot allows others to grow back in empty tilled spots more easily but I'm not sure of this.

You CAN pick them and they will regrow their flowers. Just make sure they don't go too long without being picked - they'll be permanently ruined.

On the left is what they look like when you can harvest them, and on the right is what they look like when you don't pick them for too long.

Ah thank you! That's super helpful. So you could have a replenishing garden of them but you have to make sure to pick them quickly in the right stage or they'll get ruined.

Hey do you know if Fire Nettles regrow if you pick them? I want to unlock their picked form for my plant registry but not if they won't grow back, took way too long to get them in the first place.

They do grow back from my experience. The nettles have that same heat-giving effect when eaten, but I personally haven't let any fire nettles grow (other than once for research) so I don't know how viable that is. I'm thinking of trying something with fruit flies from spoiled crops and snurtle shells to get as many fire nettles as possible.

Ok great I might pick mine then to research the picked version then let it grow back. I can't eat the nettles as I main Wig so touching the plant is my only option. Sorry can you explain your idea, I don't totally understand. Do fruit flies (the bad ones) grow Weeds faster? If so I might spoil some crops myself to help my Fire Nettle patch along. Snurtle Shell is just to get the effect from them without taking damage yeah?

Fruit flies will plant weeds in any tilled soil they can find that's empty. The ones that spawn from rotting plants though will turn hostile after they do that once (or after they bully one of your plants). Keeping the Lord of the Fruit Flies alive will net you a bunch of passive fruit flies devoted to their un-gardening task.

Evil fruit flies plant weeds in tilled soil if they aren't attacking you, so I'm thinking I till soil, spawn fruit flies (by harvesting rotten giant crops), dig up the ones I don't want (like spiny bindweeds), till soil again, and use the shell to make them stop attacking me.

Interesting, sounds like some fruit flies would be immensely helpful in growing a weed patch. Thank you!
