The current food and fish preservation makes me think of the fast dying lifespan of insects in your inventory. Especially with the moths. I think that insects in your inventory could be preserved in a terrarium like in Hamlet(this one being a decoration):

Meanwhile if lucky with the terrarium depending on insect farming in the terrarium, you can get fancy larvae you can plant for new trees or special foodstuffs.
