Rocket cargo

Recommended Posts

So my first two tiers of asteroids are carbon and oily.  Carbon may be useful if I ever need more diamond, but that's about all.  Oily at 20k with a petrol rocket using LOX needs 630 kg of petrol and LOX to get there, and the rocket only brings back 2000 kg of some mix of oil and petrol.  Is that supposed to be worth the bother?  That's a lot of work to turn 1890 kg of water into oxygen and oil ( via well ) to fly off to get back 2000 kg of oil and petrol. That doesn't seem like it really gained you very much.

Looking at the other possible planet types.. arid?  Who is going to waste rocket fuel to get salt when it has little use and there are salt water geysers at home?

Chlorine?  Well I guess if you don't have a chlorine vent then you may need this.

Dusty?  Are you kidding me?

Gas giant?  Since it's going to be even further than the oily ones, I imagine it will take more fuel to get there than you could possibly return with.

Ice Giant?  So you can trade petrol + oxygen for some oxygen back, solid CO2 that you have to waste heat to melt and vent back into space, ice and solid methane?

Interstellar ice?  So you can trade water for ice and have to use heat to get rid of the CO2?

Living planet?  Aluminum might be nice but who needs that when you can make thermium?

Organic mass?  Are you really going to trade fuel for slime and algae?  If you are out of algae and still want to breed more pacus, ranch some pufts.

Salty?  Again, trading fuel ( which takes water to make ) for water..

Don't look at bulk mass. We fly in cosmos for fullerene, isoresin, niobium, not for coal or sandstone.

Most important is Gas Giant. What happens if you fly to it with cargobay? ;)

Yeah the only thing i really try to get from space is isoresin, fullerene, tungsten/wolframite. The rest is just waste i don't need. That's kind of the point. Space is supposed to be for really rare resources, it's not worth it for primary resources like coal.

Yea, I was just wondering why they bothered with all of these other destinations that are useless.  If you could get more at a time then some of them might be kind of worth it...  shame you can only get 1t per hold and really only 2 holds per rocket.

You get NG and hydrogen.  I might do that since I have no NG vent on this map and I'd like to run the gas grill. Of course, getting some gas grass and gassy moos would be better.

If you get really stupidly lucky, then you can have a world that has base resources of a different type than rare resources. Like if you had a gas planet that has fullerene. If you send a solid cargo ship then none of the gases are taken up. instead it fills up with solid cargo only... as in 100% fullerene.

1t of fullerene is stupidly valuable.

But i have never been that lucky. All resources i ever got were tied up in like-type resources.

On the whole i agree, base resources that you can't refuse to load is incredibly wasteful.

The resources aren't random... fullerene is always on gilded.

Trace amounts will appear on other asteroids. In one play through i got all of them in just the first row of carbon asteroids. I only picked up 30kg during each launch, but it was a massive boost to my tech getting super coolant and thermium that quickly.

If a trace amount appears on an alternate word type (liquid, gas), you can pick up just the trace resource.

Ohh...  I see.  I was wondering why I couldn't find a world with isoresin on onidb.

After filling out the tech tree, there are only a few asteroids worth going to repeatedly:

  1. Decor items: the gas giant, ice giant, and oxidized planetoid return tier 4-5 decor items, though they are only brought back by duplicant passengers/pilots, and only one per duplicant.
  2. Gas Giant: solid transportation. You get the full 1,000kg of pure niobium, isoresin, or fullerene, since there is no other solids in the gas giant to take up cargo. Pray for fullerene.
  3. Rare plants/animals: interstellar ice, organic mass, salty dwarf, living planet, etc will yield biological cargo that you can't get otherwise on certain starting asteroids, other than through the welfare pod.
  4. Diamond: some starting planets don't get much diamond, particularly if you get something like frozen core or sparse oil biomes.
  5. Tungsten/wolframite: the glimmering planet yeilds tungsten/wolframite, and on starting asteroids like Verdante have zero wolframite this is a MUST.
  6. Gilded Asteroid yields fullerene as one of its primary resource rather than a rare/trace amounts resource, so you can get far more fullerene from one of these.
