Food Variety consumption bonus

Recommended Posts

One of the things I love about "Thea: Awakening/Shattering" (indie game - available on Steam)   is their food variety providing morale bonus.

In almost every game, crafting food is cool and all but usually in the end people gravitate towards the 'best' food or one type of food only and just ignore the other stuff once you progress.

In Thea - the characters gain bonus levels depending on how many food you have available to you, so trying to make multiple types of food has a benefit rather than ignoring certain types.

So as a suggestion it would be a cool mechanic  if dupes gain benefits from consuming variety of foods of some sort. Or maybe morale increases somehow (stacking) when eating variety?   Sure they consume the highest possible to get the highest morale but making use of the lower tier morale providing additional benefit?    Maybe this mechanic can be programmed into the 'assigned table'?     Not quite sure how you would do it that would easy to understand for new players.   Just an idea.

Or maybe, have a 'feast' meal that lumps various food available to you into a feast.?

I don't really see it being implemented in a way that doesn't have something noticeably wrong with it.

  • If dupes just alternate foods between meals, they'd have cycles with low morale and the bonus would have to last many cycles
  • If they pick multiple foods for a meal, there are more problems (although smaller than in version above):
    • If only the best morale matters, high-lvl food gets consumed much slower and is more like a spice than real food
    • Soul food bonus of bbq would need a rework
    • Picking up multiple foods would take extra time unless they were "wrapped up" in one "ready dinner" item or stored in one refrigerator - there is currently no option to have a refrigerator with per-item-type storage limits
    • What happens if the ratios are wrong? For example, dupe wants 500 kcal of omelette, but can only get 300. Lower bonus? Full bonus?

The only workable way of doing this I see would be to introduce new food items that work as meals. Those could need no extra labor to produce, maybe even be made by a dispenser that takes no time to use (only to load), but would still need to be predefined in some way.

Your dispenser idea could work.   Where it's a building that is placed in the rec room - so any food stored in there and eaten don't count  as their normal values/bonus  but  the bonus is from the usage of  dispenser and how many items they eat  (their normal consumption from the dispenser gains don't count).

There's already a dispenser building in the game. they could just use that artwork.   food can be 'stored' there like a storage.   if they empty the content and eat it off the floor or have it delivered elsewhere then it's counted as normal food.   use the dispenser is how they can get the bonus (like the water cooler)

A food dispenser mixing different types of food sounds cool. It could work as a higher tier fridge. Make it use 480W but it would be vacuum sealed so food doesn`t spoil inside. If active it would add a morale bonus and mix it`s contents based on what`s inside.
