What happens if a mod removes things?

Recommended Posts

Given the following:

A mod is installed, that adds an item.

If installed from steam, the game updates the mod itself.

If the mod author decides to remove that item, this will apply by force.

What happens then? Does this item just disappear? What if a dupe is wearing it?

Or is the save game garbage, because it cant be loaded anymore?

I can't speak to that particular scenario.. but I've added and removed mods from a save file and so far it acts in a sane manner. You'll get a pop-up stating that the mods running are different than the mods in your save file.  Mechanics that were changed by mods go back to normal -- such as disabling save files or changing the colors of shine bugs.  I haven't tried buildings/wearables yet.

Sure, if you run a mod that extends the sweeper range, it just reverts back to normal, and everyhings fine. (besides the work you have to do, to get your system up and running again...)

But i have a mod, that adds some items to wear, and so it affects dupes, stats, and so on. This could have a serious impact on removal.

And because of the forced update via steam, a mod author could do so much harm.

This is good information! It definitely makes sense that uninstalling a mod should (as much as possible) allow you to resume that save. Please feel free to report crashes and logfiles that come from uninstalling mods in the bug tracker so that we can make the system more resilient. (Crashes that come from installing mods should be first shown to the mod developer, but mod developers please feel free to bug us if we can help your mods be more resilient too!)

New food items: the game will crash

What if you remove all of the food, ingredients, remains and so on prior to killing the mod? Maybe even the food producers (because they have the things in listing).

And thats what i´m feared. A bad mod author could kill games of thousands of people, just by "updating" his mod, enforcing to update via steam workshop, and everyone who uses that mod would run into an unplayable savegame.

This is a serious issue, which has to be adressed.

It will still crash.

@Ipsquiggle I'll hook you up with some logs tomorrow
