A drecko farm: short-path, 95-96 block, with regular shape

Recommended Posts

I don't typically run full plants for them either. I usually only have 4 drecko going early though.

Does the Drecko population in that setup enter starving with 1/2 the food required? Their lifespan is long enough where their reproduction rate is probably sufficient to allow for this, if you are only using them to harvest plastic. I do not think their happiness affects their scale growth, only being in the hydrogen. Correct me if I'm wrong here...

I can understand keeping the pathing small, so that you could build more of these, and allow your rancher more efficient ranching...But how does it compare to the efficiency of having the drecko in the hydrogen longer?

I've done a 96 tile room trying to increase the drecko's "walkable" path inside the hydrogen as much as possible. (This room could be made longer with thinner paths, but this was a cycle 50 ranch)

I use 9 plants for 4 drecko, and they are never "starving". I could probably add more to it, but I don't really need anymore, I like keeping them happy, and I don't want them eating all of my dirt...I switch to bristleberries later on, once water is secure.

This farm can keep 7 or 8 dreckos ,very easy to construct and requires nearly no maintenance.

The footpath of drecko is designed so that the distance is very small from any position.

Is there a particular reason for the coal generator being placed there?

Looks like he used it to get CO2 on top of his mealwoord plants, which is quite clever. Maybe a little bit wasted in his balm lilly ranch, where he has to carbon skim it.

@ShinimaKhuynya Some pointers:

-You should try to avoid underfeeding your drecko's. While this works now, it could very well be that the developers fix that in later patches.

_It quite depends on what you have available for sustainable water supply, but I personally would use bristle blossom plants instead of mealwood. That way you can use hydroponic farm tiles and have them irrigated. Mealwood require dirt and some form of delivery to it, requiring either dupes to manually bring and thus forcing you to open a path for them, taking space, or keep space open for conveyer receptacles/storage compactors. It's not completely ideal. Therefore, if you have water to spare use bristle blossoms.

-Your ranch is not holding the hydrogen well. it seems it is leaking out through the pneumatic door, and conversively lets other gasses in. This will severely hamper plastic/reed fiber scale growth. You have to rework it with either a water lock or tubular transit. Also make sure that the whole ranch room bar the cells right above the farm tiles are flooded with hydrogen, just to maximize hydrogen time for the drecko's.

Lemme get a screenshot of my own current farm.

Not bad, think you can rework the design so the shearing and farmer's station is in the middle?  As dreckos on the far side have a long trip when ranchers call them

Nope, that would be an instant write off to the ranch. I can life with the dupe downtime. Also, I need those high walls to squeeze that little bit extra hydrogen time out of it, and those hinder dupes going further into the ranch

Yes but if the dupes take too much time they won't be able to groom all 8 dreckos in a single cycle leaving some unhappy dreckos which I believe will effect scale growth

That's luckily not the case. I got my grooming priorities sorted, with the drecko grooming station on highest priority, the shearing station on second highest priority and basically all other grooming stations and grooming station on priority below that. I get the job done with 2 ranchers.

I also believe the glum is only a debuff on egg production, but I'm not sure. I do groom them to get eggs out of them, just want to get everything out of them.

Hmm, I might do an entirely new ranch and see if I can place the grooming+shearing in the middle. The issue is getting access for the dupe.

Have you seen mine?  I have posted in other Glossy farm posts

I'll post the pic here when I get home if you like, mine is similar to yours but with the stations near the middle

Yes, I did see yours. Infact, I got your idea for the window tile lamps from you (which I do thank you for) and incorporated it into mine.

I quickly drew up a concept:

ranch.thumb.png.e740d26e4e79a6327e6880314c253933.png

Quick legenda:

-Green: plants
-Purple: insulated tiles (the roof will of course get window tiles for lamps)
-Dark Grey: normal tiles
-Light Grey: just air occupied with conveyer tech
-Dark Blue: grooming station
-Blue: Shearing Station:
-Red: critter drop off point
-Teal: ladder
-Yellow: door

Free air space is exactly 96 tiles. 24 plants available.

I think those are 3 tiles high

Ah crap they are. Well, it will not be present once the ranch is up 'n going and has a few critters. I think you can still move critters to the drop off point in rooms which are too big for being a ranch , right?

For newer players, would anyone mind calling out what each item is in these pictures? Trying to figure it all out but I can't recognize many things.

Yep, I use them to consolidate hatches before building ranches.
