Couple questions on DST

Recommended Posts

I was looking to pick up a dedicated server to play with my wife and son but there were a few things I was curious about and hoping people here may have answers.

First, is there an end game? Like a defined end where you NEED to restart the map/server?

Second, how is death handled? I assume I'd set it to Endless but how does that work? When we're a ghost do we need to run down to the portal to revive?

Ideally I'd like to have it setup so we can easily play for a couple of weeks building up a base etc and just having fun playing.

DST lacks a true endgame. The ruins area of the caves is the game's endgame esc area, however there is no true part of the game where you are forced to reset your world. When playing on endless you can revive at the portal any time you like when you become a ghost. Like telltale heart revival this will cause you to suffer a max health penalty which can be recovered via a booster shot.

Hope I was helpful and that you have fun playing the game!

there is no endgame though you can reset the ruins by defeating the Fuelweaver
setting the game to endless will make it a bit easier than regular Ol' DST first of all you can revive from the portal in this mode and when you burn some bushes (any Unrenewable stuff) they will regrow unlike regular DST

Another thing that might help is seeing which computer on the house is the best. That person will create the world and host it, as they will be the ones loading. Remember to add Caves, if you have a solid enough PC! They're an awesome early-to-late game area, that you will love to explore with good preparation!

Sounds like you're new the game -- if your family gets frustrated by the difficulty of the game, don't hesitate to add mods that make the game easier. If your intent is to learn the game, I wouldn't recommend this, but from what it sounds, you want a casual longterm server. If that's the case, mods make the game more enjoyable (at the cost of easing the game).

If you want a list of simple mods that I recommend, let me know.

That topic's first post is a pretty good guide to setup on a personal computer, if you want something easier to modify/more directly under your control; invaluable if you're hosting and playing on the same computer, especially if it's a multicore.

Keep In Mind, a Dedicated Server is a server open 24/7. It's different from a hosted server, where the host is a player who can open and close the world at will. a Dedicated server will always be open, and will pause when no one is in it. A Hosted server is a server where a player can click in "host world" to open, and they are the host. The world is only online when they are in it. Those 2 are very different, being new idk if you knew the difference so i might aswell mention it here.
