It will allow dupes to build very narrow small corridors with one tile high but with huge movement penalty. I think, for "optional" it would be to much work.. The idea for crawling came from one of my dupes stuck in some room with one tile open but he couldn't dig out big enough space. In real life you would get out from there, but he died in half open room.
