New Skin Set: Mystique (Idea)

Recommended Posts

Hey so it was really cool when Klei released the Hallowed Nights skin set after Mad Science Wilson had been concepted since forever.  Another skin concept I really love is the Detective Wilson skin so in a similar fashion I went ahead and made my own skin designs to go with him in what I dub the Mystique set. (Yes I was bored)

I was inspired of course by Detective Wilson, which i redrew but left pretty much as is in the original concept except I unbuttoned the trench coat.

For Willow, I had originally wanted her to be a sort of sultry lounge singer, but decided against that after I really wanted to give her a new hairstyle (Shes the only female whose hair has been pretty much the same style). There is also a similar Noir Willow skin concept that does the same thing so I instead modeled her after the protagonist of one of my aunt's favorite mystery series, Phryne Fisher, a badass female private investigator from 1920s Australia. I also took a little inspiration from flappers in regards to the dress and headdress (though i added it in after i already colored her hair, which is why its a bit darker than i would have liked oh well)

Wolfgang was a no brainer for a noir-esque mob boss, or Wolfgangster as i like to call him. I originally had him in a suit vest but since we already have vests in the game i decided the pinstripe suit was a better choice. Not sure if its clear enough but i also gave him some brass knuckles cause why not.

The next couple of characters are a little less of the typical noir archetypes which is why I decided upon the theme of mystery or mystique as opposed to straight up noir, but i made sure they were still thematic.

It took me a while to think of a concept for Wendy as I dint want her to be the femme fatale character that most females had in the noir/detective genre since she is a kid. But then it hit me, Nancy Drew! Its a perfect fit in my opinion although it was hard to find a common defining feature of the character other than blonde hair, either way I styled her to match her earlier book covers from the 1930s and I was pretty pleased with the result.

Maxwell was tough to design for because so many of his skins are him in a suit, and while i did end up designing yet another suit, i figured a butlers outfit was interesting enough to stand out from his others. You may be asking whats so mysterious about butlers?! But think about it they know all the dirty little secrets of their employers! My inspiration came from butlers from the 1930s as well as the Monopoly guy and of course the most famous butler of all, Alfred Pennyworth. (Also I am aware his left arm looks like a drumstick but I wanted to define the seams on his suit)

And last and probably my favorite of the bunch is Fortune Teller Wicker. I mean how do we not have a fortune teller skin for Wicker yet?! Its beyond perfect for her character. I went with the usual feathered turban most stereotypical fortune tellers have as well as a high collared plume jacket that I was inspired from an episode of Rugrats ( Yes Im old). I avoided giving her glasses as I personally prefer the heavy makeup her non glasses skins get and felt it would be too much for her face.

And there you have it the Mystique Collection. I have a couple of ideas for some of the other characters but honestly some are hard to make fit thematically like WX. But anyway I hope you like, and I hope Klei releases a set that goes with the Wilson skin someday ( Its a really cool theme!)

Only thing I'd suggest is make a separate Wilson head design. Remove the fedora and stick with a specific hair that goes with the w-theme while still different. Maybe give Wilson a four o' clock shadow around his mouth like his Piggsbury skin.

Yeah I had the same thoughts as I was drawing about the hats, but since Klei included it on their Wilson concept I figured id leave it and the hats are so iconic for that theme but I do agree he would need a hairstyle and I actually anticipated adding a five o clock shadow but kept the cleaner look. Same  thing for Wolfgang.  I might do a redraw sometime and do no hat variants, plus fix redraw some things that bug me after a second look like making a more feasible Wicker Jacket design, adding Wendys flower (oops), and redrawing a cleaner Willow.

Great ideas! I actually hadn't thought of separating Wick and her turban since it would take up the same profile as her hair so I figured itd be like Deerclops Wigfrid or something where it was just part of her head, but now i'm imagining what hairstyle i could give her and i think ive got a good idea plus that opens up re adding glasses which i kinda wanted to try out.

Some other failed ideas I had for characters was a Shaggy (Scooby Doo) skin for Woody, a Hardy Boys Webber (get it cause theres the spider and the boy so its both, plus it goes hand in had with Nancy Drew Wendy), and Femme Fatale Wigfrid. The only issue i had with these ideas was they were a lot harder to execute.
