Lore:

Spoiler

In 1901 William Carter boarded the Cruise Ship "Quest" to the United States.

Naturally, being a cruise ship, it had an onboard Chef, Warly!

After reaching the United States, it returned to Jamaica, directly through the Bermuda Triangle.

In a shocking turn of events, the Cruise Ship struck a large rock and began to leak.

As a storm was brewing overhead, the passengers ran for the lifeboats.

A couple of passengers managed to grab one, their names being:

Warly, the Cruise Ship's Chef.

Witherstone, a Circus Ringmaster from the UK, on the hunt for William Carter.

Watricia, a Tourist

Another made her own way off, on a Surfboard. Her name being, Walani.

I suppose karma got them good for refusing to let others on board, however. All of them went below.

Meanwhile, two Pirates (of the Carribean ;) ) sailed into the Triangle in the quest for uncharted territory. And loot!

Their names were Woodlegs, the Captain, and Whitebeard, the Lookout.

Out of the corner of their eye, they spotted a Merchant's boat. Score! Something was off about him, though... he was wearing some kind of cow cosplay. Alas, they came up alongside and came aboard. The Merchant himself gave up without a fight, but it was clear something was wrong. Shadows rose from the floor and pulled them under, never to be seen... for about a day. Give or take, y'know?

Soon after, our Survivors Warly, Witherstone, Watricia, Walani, Woodlegs & Whitebeard washed up on islands of an Archipelago.

They met Wortox, Wilbur & Winger.

The game was afoot - Wagstaff's face appeared in the Volcano's smoke.

Spoiler

Robert Wagstaff

Spoiler

Creator of the Radio atop the Divining Rod and our favourite Android WX-78

Wagstaff is on the Nightmare Throne in this prequel.

Wagstaff bargained with the Shadows for his freedom, his promise in-fact being to bring more playthings into this... world.

In his factory he worked on the PR-76 Radio with forbidden knowledge given to him by Them. Upon completion, he decided to risk it and make an Android.

Enraged by this, They forced him to burn the factory to the ground, destroying all evidence...

In an attempt to get away from Them, he came to a Desert and threw the Codex to the ground, in the hope nobody would find it...

George T. Witherstone

Spoiler

Circus Ringmaster and Criminal Mastermind

Witherstone worked to get rid of William Carter, unable to pay his debt. He sent his goons to threaten Maxwell, and upon hearing of his plan to escape to the United States, he followed. He orchestrated a crash between William's train and the Circus carriages, already well on his way to Jamaica. In a twist of fate, William escaped from the crash unharmed and got hold of the Codex Umbra. The rest, as they say, is history.
