Rocket exhaust travels through hard barriers.

The rocket exhaust can go through hard barriers.

I marked this as an exploit because I found it by accident when it heated up my boiling pond of salt water... job done and with no power cost! But it's unexpected that the rocket exhaust would not be blocked by barriers (which might then melt / spread heat of course)image.png.0e7d54ae6e546ef2842a2e228f2162a6.thumb.png.394ee43fabaf2b337bfcdbd898e8cf5a.png

It looks like this is a known behavior, but I'd still consider it a bug and exploit. https://oxygennotincluded.fandom.com/wiki/Rocket?file=Rocket_heat.png

this is old bug / exploit  from base game

I didn't find a previous bug, but very likely I just didn't search well. Do you have a link for it for tracking?

There is this old bug report

But I would say it's common knowledge by now... (or intended rocket mechanics..?)

It's a 3x9 rectangle area below the rocket as described on the wiki page. For SO it would be 3x7 below the rocket platform (still 3x9 below the rocket engine)

Penetration is a lot more of an issue in SO due to how little space some of the planetoids have.

I think it should depend onto rocket size. Smaller rockets generating smaller footprint, larger ones - large and wide footprints (steam rocket - wide one, petroleum - wide and long, hydrogen - longest but thin). Small and large petroleum engines shouldn't have identical footprint.

And I think this is how it currently works. Using the CO2 engine produced a lot of CO2 but not so much heat, using petroleum engines produces massive heat and exhaust.

So, uh, if it's a three year old (from the link above) bug, I guess I don't have to feel bad about using the heat generated to boil things?

I'm still very much trying to figure out the line between exploit and intended mechanic (been playing on-and-off since day 1)

I guess everyone has to decide for themselves where they draw the line in this game. I consider using cold and germy but sieved water for showers and sinks an exploit, but it seems the devs like it this way. Not sure the heat "leak" behaviour IS a bug. There does not seem to be much communication from the developers about these things, maybe they don't know themselves. You probably would not want the heat unevenly distributed on just the launching tiles, as they might melt, which is not very nice micromanagement-wise.

Using heat generated one way to do something else seems just like something the game even wants you to do, so it's probably a good idea.

To me, this is just another UI issue. I don't have a problem with a giant heat plume that overrides everything, but at least provide some kind of UI hint so that players (new and those who haven't built a rocket in a while) are more informed of where to build.

Personally, I think removing this feature would be a better solution. Hot exhaust gas should be enough.
