How does the virtual planeteriam work?

It says it makes research points from the output of the telescope and research modules, but so far, it looks like the telescope only scans planets and gives basic info on them.  How do you use it for research?

You need to build a Rocket with Research Modules to examine the planetoids.  When the Rocket(s) return, the Research Modules will drop Data Packs.  Dupes use those Data Packs in the Planetarium to produce additional orange Research Points.

The tooltip is outdated. Only the research modules produce data banks.
