[Crashing] NVIDIA 980M fail game launch help

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I believe this to be more of a personal computer issue (perhaps) so this is NOT in the bug tracker. That being said, I'm searching for all the help and suggestions I can get because I can't play one of my favorite games :(

The issue started when I updated my Nvidia graphics to the most recent driver (416.34 release date 10/11/2018). The game launches, my desktop becomes unclickable and I hear audio, but there is no visual whatsoever. Cannot click anywhere to get the game to react. I resort to Alt+Tab to close the game via "x."

I have tried using "Display Driver Uninstaller" to completely remove Nvidia's stuff. I've downloaded the previous three versions of Nvidia Driver for my 980M Notebook (specifically 411.63-notebook-win10-64bit-international-whql, 300.24-notebook..., 416.63-notebook...) and installed those using the .exe files downloaded from Nvidia, but no good. I have uninstalled & re-installed the game on my laptop multiple times on different hard drives (SSD and HDD). I have tried using Nvidia's GeForce Experience to change the settings (windowed & different aspect ratios) but no good.

Any help/suggestions is desired... I just want to play my fav game again :(

My opinion.. to many games :) this is the issue, leave only ONI. Now stop joking see is you audio driver is up to date, when i play CK2 old audio driver prevent the game start. Also download the video driver only from nvidia site. And try to reinstall the video driver. If this doesn't work roll back all the video driver, and let windows download and install the generic one.

Objection!. If its a custom 850m from the manufacturer of the notebook, the default drivers from nvidia may even be the very problem. Mobile-GPU-drivers are best used from the manufacturers website, because sometimes there are small adjustments, not covered by nvidias original drivers.

Some problems stayed for users, even after switching back to older version (comments).

System recovery point before update? Search on your HD for a manufacturer created "backup" folder, most times the pre installed stuff is there, perhaps a working gfx driver too.
The Nvidia update was for Grip and Black ops.
Make clean GFX deinstall - reinstall when you find it.. https://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/driver_rollback.html
So many options, good luck.

Thank you for directing me to this, but still no good. Tried all the steps on the reddit forum and what you said, but no avail... I don't have a system restore point, there's no rollback option for my drivers, and even re-installing old drivers doesn't fix the issue.

I literally have no idea what to do at this point other than to MAYBE do a computer wipe...

Perhaps ask there, before you try that.. https://forums.geforce.com/

Thank you for that suggestion. I've looked and there isn't anything.

Good suggestion on the audio driver, updated it but didn't work sadly :( I did download directly from nvidia to reinstall older and let windows try to download new one. No good either. I appreciate the help & if you have any other thoughts/suggestions let me know!
