getting through first layers

Recommended Posts

If you dont mind water locks they really help keep your base safe from the outside world. Can rush exosuits and setup doors with a pump to keep the gasses you dont want out of the base (door, pump, door). Try not to dig any slime at all and pick safe paths through the biomes. If you can find an abyssalite vein, dig a tunnel through that and just run a pipe with a pump and send some oxygen into the tunnel. You can set up some rooms and pump hydrogen/chlorine/whatever to stash them and keep the gasses neat. Can dig into chlorine from above and if its pressurized enough and you dont make a huge hole it should stay fairly contained, same with hydrogen, but you dig into it from below.

simple; i dont know how to get through the first 2 Biomes surrounding the Basic one.

Assuming your miner has a job so he can dig through granite, you shouldn't need to do much.  I usually slap an airlock onto the swamp and caustic biomes and go to work.  As long as you're not running for days, you should be fine.  A couple of deodorizers for the swamp biome can keep you from running into serious trouble, and the caustic/jungle biome won't really do you much harm, you typically just need to be able to not work too far from home.

A deoxidizer with a manual generator and a battery works really well to give you a waystation in the caustic biome.  That'll let you get near the third 'easy' biome, the cold biome, as well.  That's usually filled with CO2.  The ones you really need to be careful about aren't left and right, they're up and down.  Oil or space can make a right mess of things until you've got the tools to get near them.

What is your actual issue here?

Can't dig through?

As @WanderingKid mentioned you need to assign the Apprentice Miner and then the Miner job to some of your duplicants to dig through the harder materials.

Having issues with slimelung?

I highly recommend to dig through a slime biome first. It is the easiest to get value of in the early game since it unlocks slime fertilization for a mushroom farm, which is easy to set up and provides a very efficient medium value food in fried mushrooms. Also you get to polluted water puddles to supplement your initial water supply.

The difficulty is to not get your dupes sick, which is done by spreading out deodorizers while you dig through and by storing slime under water so it doesn't sublimate polluted oxygen with slimelung. If a duplicant still gets sick then you can easily save him within a medbay and another duplicant treating the sick one.

Having issues with gases?

The caustic biome doesn't look as dangerous as the slime biome but it actually is a pain in the ass if you don't use water locks to keep the chlorine and to a lesser degree the hydrogen from reaching your initial farms. I usually micro dig around the caustic biome in the early stages to find pockets of iron and algae until I seal off my living and farming areas with water locks. Water locks apply a hefty negative stress debuff though (sopping wet), so be prepared to measure against that. The most effective solution is to use atmo suits as soon as you use water locks. It will protect your duplicants from all kinds of hazards and lets them breathe everywhere.

@clickrush  I rarely use waterlocks except for vacuum sealing a geyser that I want to check.  I find the stress increase to be less valuable to me than just having them run in and out of the biome and some chlorine sinking down and some Hydrogen sinking up.  There's nothing really problematic in the caustic biome other than having to run home for O2.  A couple of airlocks seem to do well enough, at least in my experience.

I rush to exosuits in all my bases and seal off my oxygen/living area with water locks. The game is super stress free like this :)
