TheEvilMango
How can I heat water up to the temp to turn it to steam and than hot enough to power a steam turbine? Also what r some good power plant designs for a steam turbine to smoothly and efficiently? PhailRaptor
The issue with using the Steam Turbine is that the majority of machinery the player can build is not able to survive the temperatures required to produce Steam that is hot enough, in sufficient quantities, without destroying itself (and thus not being functional). The only reliable way is to "steal" the heat from a natural source, such as a Volcano. Iron Volcanoes, I'm told, have the largest heat output. When I did my calculations I used the specific heat capacity of magma for minor and big volcanos. I re-did the maths later on accounting for the fact that igneous rock has 5x heat capacity and with that in mind magma volcanos are a big step up over iron. Just keep in mind when extracting heat from magma that the bulk of your useful heat will come from the igneous rock rather than the liquid magma. Try not to mine it out until you really have to or you will destroy a good chunk of the useful heat. Another point to make is that the steam turbine is the worst option for turning heat into electricity. Any heat you have above 400c can be used to turn oil into petrol for better power gain per joule of heat. Any heat above 540 can be used to turn petrol or naphtha into natural gas for even more insane returns. The main benefit or the steam turbine is it's ability to delete huge quantities of heat.
