Tier 3 Artist "Mason"

Recommended Posts

I was just messing around in Debug mode, painting in my favorite tiles around my base. So many of the tiles look amazing before you mine them, and I think it would be awesome if when your artist got to tier 3 he could make blocks out of raw materials that would look like the natural material used. It could have an aesthetic boost or not, but it would give players a great way to customize their base- similar to the pitchfork in Don't Starve. It would also be cool to craft sculptures out of different materials that would come in different forms respective to the material used. I'd love to get a decor boost for myself, not just for the dupes :D

Just today I was thinking that a late game terraforming tech allowing us to build natural tiles from raw minerals would give us the option to build aesthetically pleasing barriers between biomes when POIs break the abyssalite formation, but your idea would also work.

You forgot that tiles get ANIHILATED by HALF, YEA, for the sake of BALANCE in SINGLEPLAYER.. why would someone build a natural tile, if it anihilates resource?

Multiple reasons.  You can use it to trap hatches in a non-exploity way without using plastics.  You can make a farm of natural plants more easily to grow thimble reeds in an organized fashion in the base for free.  You could also use it to more conveniently make sand by building fertilizer tiles in a hot place.

However, the main reason is to create aesthetically pleasing bases.  I personally approve even though I would probably almost never use it.  As you said, it only hurts you in a resource sense.  But some people prioritize being able to build nice looking bases and restore rock formations over playing the optimally efficient strategy.

Also, your caps lock key appears to activate randomly.  You might want to get that fixed.

You're implying that creating a natural looking tile would deconstruct with mechanics similar to mining. There's no reason for it to be like that. These tiles would essentially be composed of resources already mined and have gone through their reduction... or ANNIHILATION :D

I didn't forget, I just don't care.  When was the last time you reached the late game with a shortage of abyssalite?

Because the alternatives are dozens upon dozens of storage compactors, lots of debris causing negative decor, or feeding hatches for coal that you may not even need.  And as I said, the trade off for using raw minerals to build natural tiles would be full control over the aesthetics of your map.
