Medium-Level Metal Refineries

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

Since the Automation Update, with the introduction of the metal refinery, I feel that lower levels refineries are missing to the game...

Why? Because for each colony I create, there is that same problem: The refineries needs so much preparation!

Cooling system / LOTS of liquid, and a lot of electricity too... For so few refined metal per batch!

I don't blame the energy consumption of the actual refinery, no. But I think there should be something in-between.

This is where my idea comes from: A metal refinery, that don't take electricity and liquid coolant, but needs coal to function.

What could be the characteristics of this new building?

  • Need coal to work. I don't know how much though.
  • Heat the surroundings directly, as it hasn't any internal cooling system.
  • Produce much less metal per batch than the actual metal refinery. The actual one should be buffed for that.
  • Have a lot less choice in metal production. Can't melt metals with high fusion point. It could process copper and iron, but not tungsten, for example (IRL tungsten melt to such a high temperature!). Maybe not gold either, in order to not have something too cheated?

What would it change in-game?

  • Your can research automation before the actual metal refinery...? It's not logic. It would make more sense, and will allow players to produce metal sooner in the game, in the time it's needed.
  • I don't think it would compete with the coal generators, they have different needs, and there is so much coal on the map!
  • The actual metal refinery should produce a lot more metal per batch... The actual amount is really tiny for what it's asking, and this is very slow to process (doesn't fit the late-game). Then the mid-level refinery will help to begin the production for mid-game, and the actual one would be used for late-game with high production and better benefits than the previous one!

I think I've said everything that was on my mind for it, thanks for reading!

Oh... I never saw that... They must have added it after and I didn't noticed.

Still, this doesn't make sense, I think? I sounds like the cheap tactic of adding a mechanic to something that already exists but isn't related.

Now I feel dumb x)

My post isn't really useful anymore now, mh.

Don't worry.  I'm 1000 cycles in, and until I read this post, I still thought the granulator didn't make anything besides sand.  Oopsie.  ;)

But remember that granulator have only 50% efficiency with metals. From 100kg of metal ore you will get 50kg of refined ore and 50kg of sand.

Personally I used it only once in previous game because losing 50% of metal i HUGE lose of resources.

You have f**tonn of raw ore(except copper), you can easially use it to make essential buildings and then make advanced re refinery. So actual lossesare not that much - about 2000 kgs untill you build it, and that seems fair when you get about 60 tonns of gold amalgum on quite early game...
Also there are set pieces where you can get some refined metal.
