QuQuasar
I have 5 geysers almost directly above my base on my current map, so I was thinking that rather than bottling them up and harnessing them I might instead release them into the wild instead and build myself an underwater base, S.O.M.A-style. So, mainly what I want to know is this: how do I build an airlock with liquid on one side and air on the other? Bonus points if it can be reasonably compact (my current airlocks are vaccum-sealed [door:gas pump:door] doohickies that fit perfectly into my 4-wide walls, but they won't handle liquids). But if you've got any other advice for dealing with rediculous quantities of liquid, let me know. MoMuffins
Your base will not be so much underwater as it will be under steam, unless your world generated with monster water tiles. You would need at least two doors and a liquid sink for each entry point. Each time your dupes open the outer door, some liquid will storm in. So the liquid sink will need to handle the influx. Infiltrated water will need to be vaporized or turn into fertilizer to prevent build up. It maybe possible to go with just one horizontal door for each entry if you use U bends and mob the overflow. The gas pressure may work to hold back the water. MoMuffins
This is why I made no mention of gas permeable tiles and corner exploits. If you use them, be prepare to loose them when the devs fix them. If you build "legitimate" air locks, then they may be safer to use in the long run. Lifegrow
Mechanized airlocks are still eating water by the way - so you may want to bear that in mind. I managed to deplete half of a geyser tank (20x15) just by going in/out to sweep up debris. Although it's extremely funky - wouldn't recommend it unless you have your infinite water fully ticked off. How is the airlock designed? The doors function by placing a Steel Door tile onto the grid behind the door. This displaces any elements in the way, much like building tiles. If you block the displacement, it'll destroy the elements. Lifegrow
I've tried a few Normally now I use the U-bend design, with airlocks on only the external side (which works nicely because only gas is in contact with the doors of course). However I've also done builds where I have just brute forced mechanized doors leading into the tank, which WILL eat any water contained within them when they close - as far as I can tell. That was what I wanted to make people aware of. I had assumed that this was maybe caused by the water rushing into the freshly opened door space - and the tiles where the water had moved from being instantly "averaged out" with neighboring water, leading to the water within the door having essentially nowhere to go when it is closed? I'm sure I read that " Improved mass conservation on doors closing" was one of the fixes of late, but maybe that wasn't pertaining to water? Again, don't yell at me - I do have a simple chimp-brain after all Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/77318-underwater-base-requesting-advice/#findComment-896966 Share on other sites

Big difference between 1000kg of water and 1kg of oxygen. The simulator likely has trouble shoving 1000kg out of the way to put mass in its place. I do post exploits and show their use, as can be seen in my post histories. There are many more that I know but do not show. When I do, I clearly call them so and have never regarded them as "legitimate" game play. I find them fun quirks but don't use them in my base nor do I provide them as solutions to others. But you can do however you like. QuQuasar
Heh, I had no idea there were so many exploity methods to build airlocks. I have an idea of my own, too. My biggest question is whether or not gas pressure really can hold back water: I know the game has gas bubbles, but I'm not sure whether that's anything to do with pressure, or simply because liquid can only displace, not destroy, gas. My current idea is to make a gas bubble and fill it with not just oxygen, but all the other types of gas as well. Since they don't mix, I should be able to get 4-6 tiles of walkable dry space in front of my airlock. ███████████████www D P P D . . . █www D P P D . . . █www ███████████wLw█www █wLwwwww The trick would be keeping them there. The gas pump in the airlock would be continually pumping them back in (assuming power), but eventually oxygen pressure could potentially prevent the other gasses from being pumped back in, and we'd lose a tile... MoMuffins
You would need as many gas types as the area that you want to reserve. Gasses will happily compress to single tile of a type. Abercharr
seeing your underwater base gave me an idea!! what if the doors worked as switches also and activated all the things in the underwater room when the dup walk in and shutdown when he go out, for energy preservation purposes! ps. i love you guys for trying this Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/77318-underwater-base-requesting-advice/#findComment-899444 Share on other sites
MoMuffins
Door don't work as switches though. I'd love to be able to open and close doors with thermo sensor or some kind of sensor.
