How to build a winter-base to deal with Deerclops?

Recommended Posts

It's day 28 and I have a very nice base, but at the end of winter I'm afraid that the deerclops might come and destroy it. I want to build a separate base so I can go there when winter ends, but how far does it have to be from my base, what does it have to have to count as a base? etc.

Hi there,

You see, the beauty of it is, you don't have to build a separate base! When you hear the Deerclops coming, you just go out into the night far away from your base, and let it spawn somewhere else! Just pre-build a campfire or firepit and bolt out of your base faaaaar away, or if there's a nearby wormhole, just jump inside and let the Deerclops spawn there... then deal with it before winter ends to get it's sweet eye to make an eyebrella and you're good to go... I'd tell you more tips but this should be enough to leave it to your imagination... (or wait for more people to reply :T)

The Deerclops does not spawn at a base, it spawns where a character is, which in most cases, players are holed up in a base at the time of its spawning... it will spawn near a player and target the nearest structure to it... so just leave the base and let it spawn around one of you and be sure you guys are far away from anything you don't want destroyed...

I'm sure I read somewhere that it spawns at your base if even if you're not there, so running is a bad idea. Isn't that true?

It spawns near the player and heads straight for the nearest structures, which are usually your base or some native pig huts.

To protect your base, I suggest placing a few dummy walls (just individual segments, mind you) along the outside. That should draw its attention away from the important items.

See my post about tooth traps, build one area within 20 seconds of your base and wait there next to a fire.   It will walk around and die within 15 seconds.

If you just want to delay it, I think it sees Bee Mines as structures. Ultimately, if you didn't leave your base by the second warning or so you should let it arrive, hit it, then lure it away.

Deerclops has some other despawn conditions that you can take advantage of (going off-screen after killing player, destroying x non-wall "structures" (not sure where that list is)) but they should act as backups once you're more comfortable with killing it.

If you're playing wickerbottom, you could make a firepit a few screens away from base and then use about 2 or 3 "on tentacles" books to act as a poorman's tooth trap field (the firepit acts as both a marker and a firepit).

Just make sure you're fully armoured when you read the books, and whenever you're attacked by deerclops/hounds.
