Died Once and Almost Died Again, Multiple Attacks in Winter Simultaneously

So I was feeling pretty confident, I had beefalo, a pig village and a robust tooth safe room with 3 exits, all within 30 seconds of the base.

Wake up in the morning to the pleasant experience of Deerklops tearing down 3 layers of walls, it is approaching from the West.

With the few seconds I have I slap on a football helmet, in the other two slots are an amulet and a tentacle spike, I take a few hits while doing this.   First thought is to head to the pigs as the Beefalo population is below 15 but I lead the Deerklops through the tentacle spike field and stupidly get hit and die.  When I recover I have the good fortune of 10 hounds coming from the North and East.   Making matters worse, it is freezing cold and I will be losing health fast and soon.  Can't recover my stuff as there is too much going on (note: make emergency backpack with amulet in a tentacle trap corridor away from base).

Now I have nothing on and the temperature is 6 degrees and falling.   Head south to the Beefalo in a last ditch desperation move, the pack of hounds follow but mercifully the Deerklops seems to have gone.   Temperature goes below zero and I'm losing health fast, finally arrive at the Beefalos and within 30 seconds they kill all the hounds.    Race back up to base to start a fire and eat/raise health, barely made it.  

 

Geesh.   Fifty dull days in a row and then sheer terror.   I think I panicked a little because there were multiple threats (hounds, Deerklops, cold) and while the amulet saved my life spawning into a pack of hounds started the madness all over again.    I won't be taking anything for granted now.  I normally carry two amulets while always wearing one but that didn't help this time.

Well done on pulling through!

I would recommend to make a meat effigy and ditch the amulets in favour of armour or warm clothes. And don't sleep, unless you really need to. Use clothes, food, and befriended pigs to deal with sanity instead and use your nights more productively: harvesting, chopping wood, crafting, organising the content of your chests, etc.

I only sleep for sanity but thanks for the tips.    I was using 8 pigs to harvest wood when they all turned into werepigs, died in an instant.

Still going strong though, the amulets have saved me 3 times now.

Everyone should give themselves a better chance to live after they respawn. No reason not to put a chest next to the touchstones. Put 5-10 healing salves (you re-spawn with low health), a torch (in case its night), football helmet, tentacle spike, winter hat for winter (easy to make). After you get 4-5 deerclops eyes (around day 300-400?), make an eyebrella for each touchstone (2?) and meat effigy (1?) -- for summer heat and a walking cane at each one as well.

I've seen pro players with 2k-5k days and they get killed then it's bad times when they don't prepare. They get caught with nothing at a touchstone during the summer/winter, with hounds AND spawning giants on them with half health. It's all about risk management and preparing for the worst.

If you watched the video below, what saved him in the end was the pre-crafted tent and siesta leanto. Another reason to not only have both of those pre-crafted as well as all the fires. If you are low health and dying to heat/rain/cold, plop one/both down in a last ditch effort.

Oh, yeah, I try to remember to put a little chest of stuff near the touchstones for exactly that instance--a summer or winter death.

...note that the emphasis is on TRY... : P 

(When I _do_ remember/have time to do it, I include:  At least a bit of wood, grass, nitre (for summer), a thermal stone with fridge to optionally put it in (If I have enough gears by then), a hat, a logsuit, spear, football helmet, an umbrella (helps with both spring AND summer), and an axe.  Maybe also build a permanent firepit there.)

But, I hardly ever get around to it.  Heh.
