An item that will solve all your herding and beefalo problems

Recommended Posts

The problems:

1) Moving herds to pen them in your base is a giant pain in the ass especially when it is far away

2) Beefalos wandering around, beefalos getting lost, beefalos not staying in one damn place, beefalos following you to dangerous areas, beefalos moving incredibly slowly when you need them to move fast, beefalos blocking the chests with their big bum so you can't open them

3) Other stuff that might annoy you and which will get solved by the new amazing item I am about to propose

The solution:

The Salt Lick on a Stick

At first it was supposed to be a carrot on a stick but obviously this rolls off the tongue better and keeps the pun spirit and makes more sense

Recipe: Spear/Stick + Rope + 1-4 Nitre

Uses:

1) When equiping and holding the Salt Lick on a Stick, herds (Volt Goats, Beefalos in the proces of domestication so their horn doesn't become obsolete or just find a new use for it, No-Eyed Deers, Koelaphants etc.) follow you at top speed so they keep up with you wherever you go

This is obviously for repositioning purposes of entire herds without having to chase them around like an idiot and messing around with their spawning mechanics. Wherever they follow the Salt Lick on a Stick there their herd spawner follows too

When you hold it while unmounted, your Beefalo will follow the Salt Lick on a Stick AT RUNNING SPEED (this is very important because come on they move too damn slow usually)

2) The Salt Lick on a Stick can be placed on the ground (not dropped but placed like you would a trap), and at that point your Beefalo will stay and lick the mobile salt lick

It keeps him grounded at one place so he doesn't wander off or follow you where he shouldn't and it has the effect of a normal salt lick where it prevents domestication from being lost

Should have less uses than normal salt lick obviously. Maybe 30 licks?

3) When holding the Salt Lick on a Stick while riding a Beefalo, it will move faster

This way the walking cane speed buff can be removed while mounted because it doesn't really make sense and be replaced with something that does

If you think this is a nice idea, please write a comment so the devs will be inclined to read it

Honestly, I don't really agree with this.  I feel that moving herds in the first place should be achieved through domestication, rather than pushing them to your base.  Sure, this would require actually adding domestication to the other animal creatures, but that in itself could be interesting.

I like the idea of another way of luring them, but not having to use a salt lick, since one already exists and wouldn't be the best idea to render it useless. Beefalo are fine already, because a Beefalo horn will make 5 adults follow you until they catch up to you or until the end of the day. Maybe a lead or something instead? Or cooking some tasty food to make the crock pot be more useful outside of just cooking.

Usually people first move things to where they need them and THEN start the domestication process. Pretty sure it is done so even in real life. First you prepare the pen, then you get the animals in, then you take care of them. And I am all for proper new domestication and breeding mechanics for every of the existing animals but till they are implemented I think this would be a nice fix.

The main purpose of this item is to give better control over an already domesticated beefalo or one that is in the proces of being domesticated because they really tend to wander off and get lost and get in the way and this makes it an even more frustrating experience than it already is.

The salt lick that exists is supposed to be a way to keep them in one place for a long time. A sort of a pit stop for them that you place where you already settled and where all your stuff is. My idea is to make a portable version of that for precise control out of base and it would have a much less of a durability.

How about Klei just makes it so that they follow food on the ground. That way you can either make a breadcrumbs trail or just use the same moldy dragon pie to lure beefalo into their prison cells.

Compare having to carry crapload of food and constantly placing it on ground to having a dedicated food on a stick item that you can use even in the heat of battle. Your idea would work but it would be seriously annoying after a while. Not to mention putting a piece of food on a stick is like the most primitive tool one can imagine and I am sure the survivors in DST and even normal people should and would have thought of that ages ago.
