World pause option for host/admin

Recommended Posts

Please tell me I'm wrong and I missed it, is there STILL no sort of world pause option implemented after all this time and all the requests and the promises?

What the heck? What kind of bad joke is this...

This game is self-defined as a co-op game, well-suited to be playing with known friends and/or on LAN, its play sessions are long and time passage in the game world is very significant. It also isn't named Don't Pee Together. This lack is extremely obstructive to actually playing real co-op with friends fluidly. Really, no explanation is needed, and it's absolutely mind-boggling that this basic function isn't in yet... even after being confirmed to be planned so long ago...

By now as there are voting options for players, there should also be a server option to enable majority or unanimous vote-initiated pausing (for a preset desired amount of time, perhaps), in addition to pause and unpause buttons/commands for the host and admins.

Can we please finally get this insanely overdue basic feature in?!

I actually really like that there is no pause feature, It makes it feel more like you're surviving in a world and just generally adds to the atmosphere, however if you have to go to the bathroom or you want to take a break you can always leave, if your friend is hosting and they leave as well the world will still be there along with the progress you made and where you left off, your food will still be as fresh at it was and you can continue on, the same applies for if you're the host.

If you're referring to dedicated servers hosted by other players as admins or klei officials, If one player sticks it out the rest can take breaks and they can switch on and off. Otherwise I feel like the dedicated servers are made to be temporary so that when everyone whom played day 1-100 gets tired and leaves it can restart and new players that are just waking up or trying to get on their favorite dedicated server can have a chance at making it far into the world with an awesome base and new experiences, creating a rinse and repeat method for newcomers. Otherwise every world would be in the thousnds or even millions of days ruining safe public servers for newbies who want to play with more than 6 people, ^ I probably rambled so heres my point lol (if there was a pause feature or vote to pause, the people who started on day 1 could pause the world after every 100 days or so taking breaks, going to sleep, work etc and the dedicated servers  would have a possibility of never getting reset) For solo play I 100% agree there should be a pause feature tho lol

Edit Tip: Usually when im the last one left at around day 100 or something and im waiting for my friends to join and I cant leave or the world will reset I'll use my berry bush hat turn on my lantern make sure my sanity and hunger is filled then go to the bathroom watch my favorite show or w/e i had to do making sure i check to make sure the lantern hunger and sanity are all A ok and hounds didnt kill glommer but yea if you're webber the berry bush hat next to spiders underground= worms dead so its really fun to just relax for a bit and watch your base kill everything that thinks its tough lol

I'm aware that when playing with friends it is possible to go to the extent of closing the server and reopening it a few minutes later and having everyone re-join every time, in lieu of pausing, but that is no legitimate substitute for obvious reasons that shouldn't need stating.

This lack of a fundamental, simple feature is ridiculous. Hell, even multiplayer First Person Shooters have pause options.

Wait, no criticism or anything, but what kind of multiplayer FPSs have pause options?

Easy. Implement shack bathrooms that your character can craft and get into and give you a real life pause to actually do the same, lasts 3 minutes. If your character brings something to read while sitting there, his sanity will raise. If your character recently ate monster meat, all nearby friends will loose sanity upon reopening the door.

I like the crafting option, maybe something like a craftable ice cube that once used completely incases your character in ice, you dont lose sanity health or hunger and you become invulnerable, the world carries on but you cant move until you destroy the ice from the inside (after you get back) this idea would be like a cryo pod

...Devious.

Arlesienne Greatly Approves.

I think a pause option would be really useful. My use case for DST is mostly local coop,

Honestly, I hate the fact that if somebody calls one of us, we are not in a rush to finish the conversation or reply to them halfheartedly as we are getting attacked by something in DS. The option to use a berry hat isn't so cool since time still passes time in the game. What if a hound attack is imminent? Giant walking toward your base? What if one of you is fighting a giant and needs help?

However much we like the game, I think we will put it down until a pause option becomes available. Getting back into the habit of being disrespectful to my friends while I'm playing a game just isn't worth it.

I understand the arguments that this is a "Hardcore game", and we definitely like that aspect of it. But when I play single player, opening the map to talk to a friend IRL is extremely quick and easy, all without the need to keep one ear/eye on the game.

[edit] forgot the word time in a sentence.

It's a pity a mod for this is needed, but this is awesome! Seems to work great from a quick one-player test. I don't care about the admin requirement, though I do think there should be a way to write the mod without it, and so allow voting and such.
Guess you did Klei's job for them. Well done and many thanks!

AFK Detection should help you - or Global Pause (haven't tested the latter).

Shameless plug.

DST team, the mod I created roughly 2 months ago has hit 16k+ subscribers.

It seems that there are two usage scenarios:

1. Players that play DST alone and want to pause to avoid going back to the main screen.
2. More casual players that play on local lan.

While the mod that I created is far from perfect, it does seem to fill a big need. Right now, the mod is pretty hacky and it would be nice to have some official support for this since it seems like it is a feature that many other users want.

Anyway, I just wanted to bring it back on the table.

Yes. Seconded completely. Your mod was an instant hit, confirming the (already completely obvious) need for this basic option. And it remains in the most popular mods list to this day. Thank you for creating it, again.

BTW, surely it's also used to great effect by people who play with friends non-locally, like me and my friends (voice comm is much more than enough to facilitate great cooperation).

Thanks for the input. It is nice to know how people use the mod.
