CaptainChaotica
I finally beat my first giant... ...go me? : P Dude showed up at night (like he always seems to!) and I could hear all kinds of horrible crunching and smashing noises, but I was afraid to go over there and try to aggro him onto me instead of my structures by only lighter...light! It was only the next day that I was able to lure him onto my pile o' traps and MURDER HIS FACE OFF. I feasted upon his carcass that night. It tasted like...victory. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/67573-well-the-good-news-is/ Share on other sites
PhelsarusBeel
I guess congratulations then. The first one is always the hardest one it seems but sooner or later you're killing giants left and right. But for now enjoy your victory and lets hope it wasn't the last one. CaptainChaotica
Well, considering I'm still a fairly newish player whose usual tendency upon hearing giants is "AAAAA RUN SCREAMING INTO THE WILDERNESS AAAAA!!!" yeah, this is a pretty big deal for me, anyway. It's one of those things that's not a big deal anymore to really good/experienced players, but ya know, it's like...first reaching 100 days, or making your first honey-ham without knowing it. Me, I still haven't even seen the entrance to the ruins (or done much in the "normal" caves), have never seen a chunk of thulecite, still haven't done much of the magic stuff and have yet to break 200 days in RoG (in vanilla, yes). And don't ASK me about Shipwrecked... Incidentally, a few days after this picture it was spring...my third spring since starting this run so that's TWO FULL YEARS in one run. Another milestone for me. And in other news, after putting some semblance of my base back together, I realised I had lots and lots of monster meat from all the hound attacks but all my veggies had spoiled when my fridge got destroyed, and also that I couldn't make anything cool with my new eyeball unless I got some bone shards. I went: "I know! I'll go to the desert, get the shards from those destroyed hound mounds, pick cactus and solve both problems at once, yay!" ...and the second I got there, FIFTEEN HOUNDS AT ONCE and my traps, like, half the map away. All my armour broke instantly, Chester and Glommer got bitten in half, I had to take TWO trips back there to lure all the hounds to the angry beefalo, and only now (on day...150 +) do I have the Fluffy Bunch back, anything resembling a food stockpile, and my eyebrella made. OY! And some of my previous stuff I CAN'T rebuild until spring is over. Yeah, Deerclops can go...do something anatomically improbable with himself. : P ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/67573-well-the-good-news-is/#findComment-775292 Share on other sites
deadgag
Hah, the things you described in the above post... I really miss that feeling! When I started playing Don't Starve it was free for a weekend on Steam, and although I died many times in all the matches I played, I liked so much. I died many times due to darkness, then many times for the first pack of hounds (I was like "what?! where they come from? stopping following me!"), and finally many times trying to survive my first winter. A friend of mine started playing too and we were soon competing to see who would survive winter first. By that time I already knew about the Don't Starve Wiki, but I didn't want to read it, it is more fun discovering by yourself (but I did watch Komeny's "Only winter with Wilson", I thought that was amazing, and I learned a few things). And after a long learning curve, I defeated Deerclops for the first time and a new challenge would soon appears: Dragonfly. Man I lost TOO MANY games trying to beat summer. And when you finally learn how to survive a full year, a new kind of "fun" begins: strategies for bosses, better bases, exploring Caves and Ruins... But now... after surviving 600+ days, I rarely play Don't Starve. I got hyped for Shipwrecked, survived a full year there too and now it's been months since I played. But well, I love this game anyway sorry for bad english Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/67573-well-the-good-news-is/#findComment-775303 Share on other sites
CaptainChaotica
I was actually a bit luckier than most newbies, 'cos I had heard about the game a while ago and always thought it sounded interesting, but I didn't exactly know _what_ kind of game it was, so I watched a couple let's plays to get an idea. Fortunately, not super-long or expert ones (one of them was JackSepticeye's old, old, OOOOOLLLLLDDDD LP from back when he did an American accent!) but enough to both convince me that yes, I wanted to try this deadly, scary, creepy--but adorable and fun! game, and also to teach me... 1. ALWAYS HAVE SOME MEANS OF MAKING A LIGHT BEFORE NIGHTFALL. ALL. WAYS. 2. Beefalo are useful for many things, but beefalo with red butts are _not_ your friends. 3. The hounds will NOT stop chasing you (unless they get distracted by something else, but the people I was watching in the LPs didn't know that either) so running will not solve things forever. 4. The brain icon is sanity, not intelligence, and WATCH IT AT ALL TIMES. Or your own hallucinations will eat you. 5. Pigs are nice but don't feed them monster meat. Don't eat it yourself, either. 6. Winter will come at "around day 20", so have some kind of cold-weather gear ready and carry fire materials at all times. 7. You need gold to make a science machine and a science machine to make some of THE most necessary things; so get gold as soon as possible. 8. But if you need to get it from near Tallbird nests, get good at dodging. Get VERY good. Also stealing their eggs is a bad idea unless you know what you're doing. 9. Make a crockpot as soon as possible. Meatballs are simple and fill you up long enough to go exploring and find fancier things. 10. Planting a whole forest of trees right by your base so you can chop them and have something productive to do at night SEEMS like a good idea...until a Treeguard shows up on day 5 and you have no armour. 11. The creepy eyeball stick means CHESTER! YAY! Armed with this, my VERY first run ever lasted 31 days. Way better than those who don't know about darkness and get killed on night one, or don't make it through even one week. I _might_ have guessed the "don't be in total darkness" thing, though, 'cos I've played both Zork and Shadowgate. That being said, my death on Day 32 was not due to winter. It was due to "OH MY GOD IT'S DARK AND I CAN'T PUT MY CAMPFIRE ANYWHERE HELP HELP HELP" dead. : P ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/67573-well-the-good-news-is/#findComment-775410 Share on other sites
GentlemanFridge
I remember my first run... *clears throat* As every player I started out with Wilson, I knew the basics with the light and food and such. I (kind of) knew what I was doing. It took me quite a while to get gold, because I was scared of the big one-eyed thing that lived close to the rocks. (I believe every boulder dropped gold back then). Then, I found the graveyard mini-biome, which to me was a fountain of gold. I settled down in a forest. Bark. WHAT WAS THAT!?!? BARK BARK AAAAHHHH, OMG I'M GOING TO DIE. 't was the very first hound wave, and it was late. (Day 14) They arrived before I knew it. I was totally unprepared. (I didn't even know about the spear or armour back then.) Funny thing was, as unprepared as I was, I killed one of 'em in a blind panic. And then I got cocky... I when head first to the remaining pup. And that was the last time Wilson saw the sun. MTX1234
@CaptainChaotica well congratulations I remember the first time I killed my giant, I thought after that I could do anything so I went underground and got killed by a wave of worms. CaptainChaotica
Oh, I'm perfectly aware I can't do everything--for example, Adventure Mode kicks my butt. : P I keep getting to _maybe_ Chapter 2 and then dying. ...on the other hand, I used to not be able to pass any chapters at all, so I guess I'm improving...? ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/67573-well-the-good-news-is/#findComment-778704 Share on other sites
