CautiousGamer
One of my pet peeves while playing DST is when a new player joins your base and picks your berries in the middle of the day, (thus spawning gobbler(s) who proceed to eat your entire stock of berries within less than a minute). You can't catch these gobblers very easily, and chasing them off doesn't really solve the problem. It just leads them to other bushes elsewhere. Some "new" players don't seem to be bothered by this at all, and just accept it as inevitable. Well folks, spawning gobblers is wasteful and completely preventable. So I thought I would put out a post to help to educate those that are new to the game and encourage them to change their habits in an effort to save these valuable resources. Know that there is a 10% chance of spawning a gobbler with every berry bush you pick. This might sound like good odds early game, but when it's winter, or when you or someone else at your camp is starving and really need those berries, why take a chance? Try to get into the habit of waiting till dusk to pick the berries. This way if/when the gobbler spawns, he immediately goes back into the bush without eating any berries (thus saving your resources). If you are trying to farm gobblers for the meat, that is a different story. Just do so in a controlled way so you don't waste berries. For starters, make a habit of always have 3 red caps on you at any given time. This way if you do spawn a gobbler, just drop the mushrooms on the ground and back away. The gobbler will wander towards the redcaps and eat them. If he eats 3, he will die and you can collect the drumsticks. Leaving a few tooth traps around your berry farms will also help (a bit) if newbies pick your berries without knowing these tips. Try to plant your berry farm right beside a few red caps that might be growing near by. This will help if you don't have any handy. Plant your berries around the existing ones near frog ponds. If a gobbler spawns during the day, you might get a little help from the frogs. Try to plant your berry farm in small clusters of 3's or 4's rather than 1 huge group of 10 or more bushes. All it takes is one lightning strike, or misplaced torch (or worse - a griefer) and your entire crop is up in flames in a second. Leaving sufficient room between the clusters is a good practice to protect against fire. Don't pick every berry bush within a 10 mile radius of camp. Eventually, someone (maybe you) will be starving, but not close enough to camp and will need that berry to survive long enough to get home. Be courteous and only pick a few. Hope this helps. TemporaryMan
You can also surround a powder cake with four stone walls and it'll distract all the local gobblers. Arlesienne
Two words that would make sense in the game as official content: Throwable Spears :). A lifesaver in winter when you need more meat. TheOracle
I normally like the powdercake method, but using boomerangs to kill is an option too. Gobblers won't stay out of their bushes to eat in caves, too (although had some trouble with disease sometimes when transplanting down there after the last updates). cezarica
By far the best method to deal with Gobblers is a Powdercake within some grass, wood or even stone walls that Gobblers can't reach. Another method is to put a red mushroom, a single raw berrie or even a carrot on the ground a few steps away from the Berries farm and when a Gobbler spawns it will get lured to the stuff you put on the ground and smack his beak with a Tentacle Spike if you have one and will die from one hit. A Bee Mine is somewhat good way to deal with them but not as cost effective as other methods. Edit: Forgot to mention something, you would need two Boomerang hits to take a Gobbler down with all characters except Wolfgang in his Mighty form and Wigfrid i guess cos of their damage multipliers.
