Old timers... 100 days + what do you do with it???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So, I've always played a bit of a 'jump and run technique in vanilla and ROG, settling for a year or so and then moving on, obviously, that generally negates building up too much in the way of resources.  I hear what you are saying (there is no such thing as too much)!  But I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it all, I found a great world so I settled and am playing as Webber 90 plus days in, I have 5 old bells (urgh, and no Krampus sack), over 200 webs, 200 healing sacs (have not even made any healing prototypes) more straw/twigs/logs than I can poke a stick at/use as fuel.... I have owned Goose/Goose and the Dragonfly but have yet to meet Bearger or Deerclops (but am well prepared). I have a base near the volt goat and one near the walrus camp (I have the cane but not the tam o'shanter), I have a tooth trap lair and a separate area for Dragonfly show downs. In addition I have my forest for 'bell deforestation' but I have all these sodding webs and spider queen hats.... Im at quite a loss for what to do with them!  Should not complain, am not really complaining... but I find myself wishing I could use them as fuel!!

I was like "200 Silk in just 90 days??" But then I realized you were playing as Webber. Yeah it's annoying that you can't really do much with Spider Queen hats. If you place a Lureplant somewhere you can use it as a grinder/garbage bin for inflammable items.

Some projects I personally enjoy are:

- making a large moleworm farm (lots of free minerals)

- walling in my base with stone walls and placing lots of cobblestones on the floor so I run fast everywhere

- spider apocalypse with queens running around everywhere (takes a long time but you get a lot of silk and meat)

- making the caves a safe environment by destroying rabbit hutches and spilagmites

- farming nightmare fuel in the ruins

anyone can make funny things when gets bored of surviving, once I made a big zoo with almost every mob that can be imprisoned, other time I made a battle arena for giants, I clean a big area and filled with tree guards or spider queens, then I waited for giants.
You can do lots of personal achievements like survive in caves for the whole 4 stations, eradicate all herds of beefalos, goats and every mob that can be extinguished, draw with turfs or become vegan
I made all these things since Don't starve came out, has been almost 4 years and I got bored, now Im doing some of these personal achievements in together, I can't kill a dragonfly yet and I'll get shipwrecked soon to think about what could I do with it

Build a world-sized MEGABASE! Once you reach the point of unkillableness, just sketch out what you want. This section for farming, this section next to that for storing and cooking and dealing with food, this section here for fighting hounds, etc. Its pretty cool once nearly the whole world is your base.

Then Deerclops comes by and you lose half of your base... :(

well, its no problem now as I stupidly went to pick up some dung and forgot to de-equip my tentacle spike -ended up hitting a beefalo :( (without armor obviously I was a gonner!) Sooo I started again.... now on day 53, I have 3 main parts to my base (pretty central - on the edge of a swamp) all of which are set for inclement weather with lightening rods and ice flingomatics, and still have plenty of space for developing:

1: butterflies and bee box x2, next to which is a pig farm and 2 x 9 berries

2: Main base, 7 x chests, 5 x drying racks, 2 x crock pots, alchemy machine, bird cage and spidey friends

3: farm base - 4 x farms, 40 x grass 40 x twigs

I have a little winter camp (tent, crock pot, fridge, fire) up by the walrus and spent most of my first winter up and around there,  killing the walrus and farming hounds teeth - occasionally running to glommers statue or main camp to offload stuff, I got a tusk for a walking cane but unfortunately no tam o'shanter as yet :( I also found the ices staff set piece up there so I now have 32 teeth after making my sewing kit.

I was really lucky, in my world there was a ring of tier 3 spider nests so I destroyed these with a little help from my friends and relocated to my base.

Im not too far off set for summer really, I have all I need to get by and I used one of my bells to deforest so I have 200+ wood, 50+ manure and some rot so fuel is no issue.  I dont really have a decent rocky area near me so my next priorities are:

Set up my endothermic fire and shelter

Create a rocky area for dragonfly showdown.  I have identified the area - just need to get digging as there is nothing close to camp

Set up 30 tooth traps

My main disappointment with this game and the last is first autumn and winter - no giants :( (I know, be careful what you wish for) but I really want my eyebrella  - game is set to default for giants so I am guessing I must just miss them! Every start of game I make it a priority to get my gunpowder ready, and make a pan flute (although there was one by glommers statue), but then they don't show :(  Fingers crossed for next Autumn/Winter!!

@Soto8969 I love the Lure-plant suggestion... so lets make that a priority too!

@MatthewCR7 I like to wall my base in too, but I find the spiders attach my walls, Im not sure if this is because I place my spidey friends too close to my camp (can they ever be too close? ;) ).  Next autumn will also be my time for turning basecamp into a home :)

I also love spider apocalypse - and do this more often than I probably should!

I also want to work on my farms - as yet I have no dragon plants, I like to generally get to a point where that is nearly all I grow.

Fireflies and lanterns.... Im very behind on this!  I normally have my entire base lit up like a christmas tree by now... more things to work on!

Moleworm farm... like this, but can you move them?  I didn't think you could.

@emerphish set areas for different tasks base wise is my overall aim, I also love the freedom I get from knowing I can move from location to location in summer/winter with ease and relative safety.

Caves/ruins wise - I will start exploring down there properly come autumn, that should give me ample time up above to do the things I want to do and set myself up properly with taffy .

I never get bored of this game - every game is different, there are so many different ways you can play it!  I have attached an image of camp map, to the far right just beyond the trees will be my dragonfly area (am still deciding on my tooth trap site but may well be in the same place.  beyond that is my winter camp/walrus camp and above that, my new bell deforestation location!

Loving all the suggestions and ideas - any more please do keep them coming!

I actually find dragonfly one of the easy ones - I always make sure that by the time he comes I have two stashes of gunpowder as I know many people have experienced him waking up when they place it (although I have not).  I started playing Shipwrecked and then got a little bit bit bored, so I went and unlocked webber and started playing ROG with him, I play with a handful of mods but not all of them are compatible with SW so I have opted not to link this world to SW.  I like to build an area for my animals too, but Im thinking year three for that.   Although its generally a disaster idea I am considering luring the dragonfly down to the beefalo... there were loads in this world to begin with but OMG have they bred this spring??!! I could definitely  do with thinning them down.  However, I could just drag my spidey friends down there I suppose  (probably a safer option!)

Yeah you can move Moleworms around and farm them but you kind of need to know their mechanics. A burrow (the ones you can dig up) will spawn exactly 1 mole at a time, and if you kill/capture that mole it will spawn another mole in 24 hours (so an ingame day pretty much). If you dig up the burrow while the mole connected to it is still alive and underground, the mole will dig a new burrow in about 10 seconds if it's not asleep or when it's daytime (they're mostly active at dusk). So really the only way you can get rid of this cycle is to first capture the mole and then dig up its burrow before a new mole spawns. But if you want more moles and not less, you want to capture the mole and wait a day until a new mole spawns from its burrow. Then you can release the mole you captured and it will dig a new burrow (so now you have 2 moles and 2 burrows). That's how you do it. If you have Chester you can capture like 15-20 moles at a time and make a large farm really quickly. It's infinite morsels, rock, flint, gold and nitre for free which is pretty useful.

Thank you!  I will remember the mole trick for the next world!  Because surprise, surprise I died :( Day 107 (I think) and I had done so much more to my little world, I had 11 farms all full of glorious Dragon fruit, 40 twigs and 80 grass.  I had walled in my Beefalo for a top of the range bbq extravaganza, My tooth trap area was numbering 50 odd traps, 200 trees planted and ready for Bigfoot, I even found a lureplant and set up my garbage disposal.  Everything was dandy.  I created a temporary Krampus/feather farm down on the Savannah, threw a load of stuff down for him to pick up and made a truck load of boomerangs.  The Pengulls settled near me and I thought I would be cheeky, grab some extra Krampus points by pushing one away at night and killing it, I didn't push it far enough away, killed it - looked at the pengulls (they were all asleep - went about my own business and bang, they jumped up and in one fould pecking frenzy my little man was dead! :o

I think in the next world Im sticking to killing birds of the non pengull variety!;)

Yeah Penguins are very dangerous as long as they are in group. I only like them because of the Mini Glaciers they spawn, otherwise I hate them :/ Maybe if they always dropped meat they would be more interesting.

I agree, hateful things - but buzzards, now they are my new favourite bird - easy kill, easy turkey dinner :) and her I was thinking they were useless until yesterday!

Here's my Wigfrid World, another new character for me, day 33 and Im pretty happy with my base and the world gen on this one -  a few beefalo nearby, relocating the pigs nearer to my camp and I have 3 walrus camps!  Bring on the tam o'shanter as I found a walking cane on my travels in the autumn :D I was also fortunate in that I could begin the build of my camp on day 2 as my initial location was pretty ideal.  I am pretty sure that everything in this world is on default (apart from autumn, I put that to longer as I had never played Wigfrid before and wanted to do a dummy run) but I love the way this land is linked - I can run all the way around it easily and access so many areas in little time!

A long way to go, but I like it and I like Wigfrid, hoping I can find some more rocks when I continue exploring but if not, its not the end of the world
