Don't Starve Guide (for beginners).

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I prepared small 4 page loose guidelines for beginners. They are in the form of calendar which includes each season and standard number of days. In terms of references I hope that I used only original artworks and graphics made by Klei Entertainment.

I believe this kind of guidelines are good specifically for visual-type audience like me. I hate read 20 pages long guides to find out what I should have done already.

I hope I made this post in proper section. Finally, let me know what you think about it and how this may be further improved.

Here is the link to gallery.

Very artistic and cool looking, too bad its WAY off for quite a few events, the first deerclops spawn for one isn't on day 26 its on Day 30 in Together, 31 in single player.  Im not gonna pick apart the whole thing just pointing it out.  Nice work though.  I like just looking at it

To be honest. I am willing to polish this as much as it is possible. So please, outline everything you see is wrong, missplaced or missing. I highly encourage you guys to do it. We may eventualy come up with nice decent guide.

Only thing i could think off the top of my head that this needs that it doesn't have is when full moon is.  that  would be helpful.  everything else in it is all personal preferences.  Like for instance days 1-9 would all be explore and gather for me.  I wouldn't put craft anything(structure-wise) until day 12, maybe science machine, backpack, spear, armor, shovel and proto alchemy engine on day 2 but definitely not place anything.

Since Pigs and Beefalo are not always at the most optimal positions, i suggest adding an option to camp near them for a few days and find a better mix of biomes as beefalo are normally in a vast savanah. You can also choose to base near a walrus camp if you want to farm tusks+Shanters+Blowdarts/Bluegems. Also, add the respawn times for walrus camps(i think its 2 and a half days, not too sure?)
Additionally, maybe add arrows eg say you find beefalo you can put 2 arrows into 2 different boxes like either base here or camp and keep looking. Last thing for now, possibly add a strat for bearger/deerclops/dragonfly/Goose?

Further notes: Personally, I use "More Structures" mod. It adds couple nice items to craft including firefly lamps elaborated in 17.

PS: Settlement near walrus camp... Inexperienced players may be wasted, but I will elaborate this on winter v2 page :D

With the 10 honey on bearger thing, it sleeps him. Yes, this does indeed 'pacify' him, but if you want to kill him for the thick fur drop, this does not work, as when you attack a sleeping bearger it will yawn and sleep you too, aswell as the fact the bearger priorities the player over honey. And then when it wakes up, it will beat the crud out of you, if you are unprepared for it. I personally find letting a few eggs rot during summer(14 for bear) and then when bear comes, use a sleep dart(crow feather, reeds and hound teeth(i think)) and then drop and light the gunpowder. This should leave him on 200 hp and wake him up, and you should be able to finish him off and take the thick fur. Also, Cw are rather hard for the inexperienced, having 300 hp(more than your average character) with knight having a kiting maneuver, bishop with "death lazorz" and rook with a damaging charge, they will take a player with decent gear to attempt then. Unless your wigfrid. Then you can take knights all you want

This is only in Together.  If you read the calendar this is for single player since the full moon is on Day 9 not 11.   Bearger doesn't have his yawn sleep mechanic in single player.

Well I believe I need to clarify some bits. The most information are based on wiki page. Therefore, it may sounds a lot like single player, but in fact both base games are the same with some slight differences only (as far as I am aware). The biggest difference I seen is in HP level, where in DST is doubled or tripled. Beginners, wont bother if the moon is on Day 9 or 11. If they got prepared quicker, then it is even better for them. I still consider myself as beginner so I may lack of knowledge you guys already have. That is why I am asking for corrections, and if they are helpful and/or critical, then I am trying to make changes.

The main issue with visual type of guides is limit of space where in this case is associated with limit of content that I can put into a specific day. This means the guide does not cooperate with divergence this game brings. However, regardless of divergence in every single scenario, I am trying to cover only essentials and preparations to let beginners survive long enough.

The guide tells what has to be done and what preparations must be made toward next season or battle whatsoever I do not want to reveal absolutely everything, because this breaks fun and discovery part. Ultimately, this game is all about an unexpected death. For one hand, the guide only shows a path that leads to survivality, but wont tell you how you should approach the path and how quickly you should go through it. For another hand, due inflexibility toward divergence, the guide leaves 'traps' as well. For instance, hound attack may occure sooner or later. If you are not prepared, then they most likely will kill you. For another instance, If you approach to CW with no tactics then you will die.

I believe this guide is general (flexible) enought to be in both sections whatsoever I have not posted it on single player section yet. However, I do not mind posting this guide in single player section as well.

You shouldn't say "Beginners won't bother about this wrong information" when making a beginner's guide. I know there are limitations but full moon is one of the only day specific events you need to remember, especially if you want gloomer or play Woodie. It's still a mostly useful guide for multiplayer but it would be you clarified about it being singleplayer.

Yeah I know I shouldn't say it, but that is truth to some extent. It may lacks of political correctness, but personally, I played over 30h in DST and I haven't noticed that full moon difference. I'm probably not apprehensive enough. Moreover, wiki does not elaborate this difference at all. Wiki page.

Once I finish v2, then I will publish it as a whole on DS section as well.

I make my base in DS around day 18. It may be seen a bit too off but i explore almost whole map including wormholes before choosing the best spot. I find all things and place to teleportato thing before winter. I wanna be sure I explored all mactusk camps and such. But after that time I really dedicate too much work on base and make it a really big base before first year is done.

Also I don't think any guide would be correct or incorrect for don't starve because everyone has a different playstyle. As long as u are alive any strategy is OK. you build ur own gamestyle as you play the game more and more.
