mitboy
So, umm. Yeah, some possible ocean biomes. My point is not to actually provide fully developed concepts, but rather to show that it's possible to make interesting ocean biomes, since I heard that some people are saying that "Ocean is supposed to be empty"So, umm. Yeah, some possible ocean biomes.1. Seaweed biome. Water has green color there. Since everything covered in seaweed, your boat is slower.First of all, there are some seatrees, made of large chunks of seaweed. You can get some wood and seaweed out of them. There's no water waves, but instead, sometimes there will be large chunks of seaweed waves, aiming for you. Once they catch you, you won't be able to escape, and your boat will lose durability (Fight them!). Sometimes where will be some coral bushes, that allow you to collect coral without mining. There probably should be more creatures, but I can't think of any. Possible seaweed boss. What you could find there? First of all, special sea plants, some of them would be poisoned, so could use them to posion other creatures (Basically, more effective red mushrooms). Second, you will be able to build special seaweed boat. Instead of durability, it spoils, and you could repair it with seaweed, like Ice Cube. Good thing about this boat - it gets way less damage from waves and doesn't have reduced speed in seaweed biome.2. Wrecked Ship. Mostly looks like nomal water, but lots of wooden chunks. And sometimes tiny chunks of ground with wooden flooring. Monsters:Ghost shellfishes (do damage not only to the boat, but to the player too!).Flying spiders (could cut your sails!). They are really fast, and also could use rush attack. Some chests, some treasure (Cursed!).The only place where you could find helm. You could place helm in lantern slot. It gives your boat much faster acceleration.3. Anomaly. On the map, looks like a big triangle. Mist, Passive sanity drop, white water, lightnings without rain, toxic rains (Gas mask!). Calm water, rarely (often during full moon) waves could suddenly detach from water and turn into spinning balls of water (Maybe purely cosmetic thing, maybe not). And barrels with toxiс wastes. You can use bottels to gether some toxic substance (Gas Mask requred!) and use it for... I don't know. Something cool. Probably, there are should be also some weird creatures, but Don't starve has weird creatures initially, so I don't know. Also here's some crappy sketches. AnonymousKoala
I LOVE these ideas.Unique sea biomes would defiently make the ocean more interesting, or are at least a step in the right way. Seaweed boat is such a cool idea too. Wrecked Ship biome should be a possible outcome for the X marks the spot things. WillPwn4Food
At first I thought the idea about the waves in the anomaly biome was dumb. Then I saw the picture. That's hilarious and it would fit perfectly with some of the non-sensical realities of the DS world. I'm just chuckling here thinking about a wave getting so curled it actually flings itself out of the water... ThaumicParrot
I wanna see an oil leak biome, with floaty boaty knights, buoy bishops, battleship rooks, oil spouts, and a steam boat! Lacost
sometimes there will be large chunks of seaweed waves, aiming for you. Once they catch you, you won't be able to escape, and your boat will lose durability (Fight them!) My suggested change: There are dense patches of seaweed floating on the water you can traverse but not interact with. Once you enter a tile there is a small chance you get trapped by seaweed. You have to cut your way out of it in order to sail again. No ship damage is taken but you will loose some time. 2. Wrecked Ship. Flying spiders Please no flying spiders. Spiders are overused anyways in caves and ruins and poison and warrior and queen and webber and..... Add a lot of boulders in that biome that cause ship damage once you touch them.Add a new game mechanic featuring currents that move your ship on it's own .... and most likely into boulders. You can navigate with boats and cargo boats (not rafts) against them but you are slow and as soon as you stop hitting your keys you will drift away. Generally I think currents are a much needed game mechanic in SW. Waves alone are not enough.
