The Walani question

I'm going to be clear: I really like walani. I know, she may seem bland, but she's actually pretty cool as a character. Her design is especially nice. But she has one big problem: her perks.

Rain wets and drains faster on her, sanity modifiers have less effect, her health is lower and her stomach bigger with a slightly faster hunger rate. And then there's her surfboard. Sure, a free boat right off the bat and easy to craft, which goes fast, gives you +1 sanity per wave you ride, can be picked up and let's your hands free (to use a torch for example) is REALLY good...but only until you are able to craft something better (as the Armoured boat).

The characteristics of the surf board are:

-less durabity

-hitting a wave makes you more wet

+hand free

+pick up-able

+fast

+ [+1] sanity and x5 speed boost when riding a wave

This may seem obvious, but having a harder to craft but better surfboard you could use in the late game would be great. It could use Living Logs and maybe gold? And it should not only be a straight up upgrade of the surf board but also have something more going on (can surf on big waves for example!)

I just want something more to this character, she has great potential ^^

That is not true, you lose durability like usual AND get more wet.

 

And yeah, she definitely needs perks.

I personally don't understand why she even has penalties in the first place considering how limited her perk is.

On the topic of Walani, I would prefer to see some sort of change that makes her less of a.... eh character.

 

Compared to Wilson, she lacks a beard and therefore, no easy effigies.

 

As for her perks? She can craft a Surfboard, which at first I enjoyed the concept of, seeing how she was a character that could explore the seas faster and earlier than others. Too bad she's just outright bland outside of the board.

 

Even with the board, although it's great you can pick it up and carry it with you, the low durability means that after sailing for a few days, if you haven't found a spot you want to camp, the board will likely be near breaking even without hitting waves. It's nice that you can build another board by default, too bad you need a science machine (for the board required). At that point, you minus will get yourself a rowboat for the extra durability and same speed, and now you're playing a Wilson without easy access to beard hair.

 

As for ways to improve her? Taking into account the previous flaws, I think it would be best if the Surfboard recipe didn't require boards so it has better early game potential, and the ability to create different surfboards with the usage of Science/Alchemy machine that would offer a variety of perks to make sure her surfboard gimmick doesn't get immediately out shadowed by the obvious Row/Cargo/Armoured boats.

Maybe since she knows her way around a board, boards could be unlocked for her as a recipe by default, allowing her to re-craft her surfboard from the start.

 

As for her late game potential, I agree some work needs done there.

She does have debuffs: as her sanity goes down slower, it also goes up slower; as her wetness drains faster she also gets wet faster; as her stomach is bigger, she gets hungry faster. + she has low health. These are already many debuffs

I do agree the recipe for the surfing board should have boards. Having boards and the surfing board recipes already unlocked sounds good, although she would lose the sanity buff from prototyping

The only thing I can think of for a later-game item is maybe board wax (a tacky substance used to increase grip of surfboards, generally consisting of a wax, sand or other course material, and essential oils to protect the board).

 

Made from:

  • 3 honey
  • 1 sand
  • 1 coconut (cooked?)

Stackable (up to 20)

Can only be used on the surfboard.

Each use consumes the item

Item image would be a waxy paste inside half a coconut shell

 

Transforms the board in to a "Waxed Board" when used on a surfboard (used like a boat repair kit).

  • Repairs the board 50-100%?
  • Increases the speed of the board
  • More durability than a regular board?

I dunno, thoughts?  I dont want to make it too powerful since it's not incredibly hard to make, but the honey should mean that a player has at least a minor base set up.  However I'm having a hard time with the bonuses.  Is repair to 100% too much for the ease of getting the item?  Since the surfboard is so easy to make 100% repair might be good since otherwise players would just re-craft the board, however they'd end up with a basic board and not a waxed one.

I love the idea of an upgraded board being able to ride the big waves.

I also think it might be cool if bees or their hives started to rarely drop Wax when defeated, which can be used on both boats and surfboards.

The reason I feel inclined to suggest that Wax can be used on boats as well is because, well, not only does it make sense, but it would really be dumb if Wax became an item that dropped, yet only Walani can use it, or, still less desirably, it was somehow an item that only dropped whilst playing as Walani. I don't know that that's a way that Klei/Capy want the game to work so my proposal is simply that wax drops for everyone but is best used on surfboards.

Yeah, I'm liking the wax idea more and more with this drop fashion. It would make Walani feel really special!

Maybe we could make a completely new thread for that specific item suggestion, just to get the idea out there and see if other people like it.  :wilson_nerdy:

I too, agree that new surfboards would be a great idea to make her a more unique character.

 

As mentioned above, I love the concept of her being able to know the recipe for boards off the bat, giving her better early game potential once your starting board inevitably breaks.

 

For custom surfboards, I believe they should keep the gimmick of having low durability, but should offer something in return.

 

As for two ideas I had for a surfboard, the first would probably have immunity to being slowed down by wind as a bit of a novelty thing. The second board idea would maybe be like the default surfboard except with spikes/other painful object on the front which would hurt enemies with direct contact.

 

Anywho, that's all I got for now.

Instead of having to change drops, make wax craftable from honey.  2-3 honey = 1 wax.  If bees have too many drops (honey, stinger, wax) then its harder to get any of the three.

 

Alternatively, "feeding" a hive or beebox honey could result in wax after feeding it 2-3 honey.
