Seashell

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

How do you get enough seashells? I never have any on my island's beach, and in my neighbouring island i only found 1 for a grand total of 5 (i got 14 during exploration phase, made a seashell suit). I need at least 10 for a boat. I know they respawn, but what is the rate? It's unsafe to go to far away islands in wierd seasons, so how do i get enough? I have been treasuring my seashell armour since i made it.

While they don't look it, the Seashells that spawn on the beach are actually pickable resources like Berry Bushes or Saplings. They respawn every 2 days, for now. I'll let you see for yourself:

SEASHELL_REGEN_TIME = total_day_time * 2, --So small for temp testing

That comment makes it look like they'll take longer eventually...

Sail around looking for islands. If you find one with a lot of Seashells on its beaches, mark it with a Sign or something so you can remember where it is. Every couple of days you can go back and get more.

In addition to building boats and armor, Seashells give you +5 Sanity like Flowers do, so if you find a bunch, they can be a really good way to recover lost Sanity.

They respawn in exactly the same spot they were when you pick them. Like I said, they're just like Berry Bushes and Saplings in that regard.

Whew, thats good! Now, when this hurricane season ends, and the monsoon's first rain occurs, i'll go on an adventure. Also, how to keep flowers from bee boxes from being blown away? All of mine are gone, and i am already low on honey (making taffy for sanity, abigail dies so quickly by hail).

I haven't run across anything that stops things from getting blown about. I don't suppose building a wall would have any effect?

Walls get one shot by hail. Monsoon and Hurricane are so annoying with regards to honey.

Hurricane- no flowers/butterflies

Monsoon- red bees and abigail, figure out the next

In my first world, by day 73, I had found 6 shells, this was before "hang ten." In my new world, on day 57, I have found 67 shells. I think the devs need to balance out how they spawn, to make them equally and dispersed and not overly abundant, yet not far apart and ridiculously rare.

Beached seashells are not renewable. Once picked, it'll never grow back or anything.

However, the game will naturally spawn new beached seashells on flooded tiles.

I mean no disrespect, but neither of these statements is correct. However, upon investigating the scripts, I found that my previous statement isn't entirely correct either...

The prefab name for the "seashell in the sand" is seashell_beached. These are added to beaches during worldgen from the file scripts/map/rooms/beach_terrain.lua. Take a look in there and you'll see lots of references to it in calls to AddRoom().

Beached seashells are defined in the file scripts/prefabs/seashell_beached.lua, which has the Pickable component added to it (the same one Berry Bush and Sapling have).

What I found when looking in the Seashell script is that when its respawn period expires, it fires up a 5-second periodic task that waits for the spot where the Seashell is to be flooded by the tide. When it is, the Seashell will "regrow" and once again be available for picking. If the tide doesn't come in, it will never regrow.

Check the attached screenshots. I spawned some Seashells in a highly improbable arrangement and picked them, then sat there until the night of day 3, when the first tide begins to cover the beach. Not long after the tide came in, I saw a highly improbable arrangement of Seashells appear.

I like this one thou.

Build the bee box during monsoon at my base just to get all the stringer I need for the next few seasons, plus some honey in the process.

Catch 4 bees before I hammer it down. Make another bee box and keep it in the tab.

Fair enough. Looks like the wikia has lied to me once more.
