Best way to deal with hounds

Hello everyone!

 

I have come to the day 101 mark where the hounds are guaranteed to strike (for me). Till now, i just run to the monkey infested area of my island but i never get their drops. I also get lucky with where the fire hounds die, because i haven't got a forest fire yet.

 

How long will it last?

I am thinking of dealing with them in other ways....but i only have one idea. So, do you have any way to deal with them?

 

I am thinking going to sea and then coming to land so sea hounds appear. Then, at night, send abigail to kill them. BUT i think that they'll attack my boats when i am on land.

I don't recall sea hounds attacking boats without a driver.

 

Use teeth traps, they're viable even in the late game. I would recommend sticking with hounds because they can drop gems, but if you want to make the crock pot dish that makes you naughty, then kill sea hound for the fin.

The thing is, since i used monkeys for defense, i have no teeth. I had 2, but sewing kit. Whew, thats better...i am going for sea hounds now!

The best way to deal with hounds is to craft traps, but if you can't craft them, you'll have a hard time for later hound waves.

 

I think that a pan flute + coconades can be somewhat effective if you can craft them. Be sure to bring ennemies on the beach so that your 'nades won't burn too much stuff.

 

Also, armor+helmet+weapon works too. If you're hunting whales quite often, you may have a harpoon or two, and this thing guaranted to one-shot ground hounds. It deals 200 HP and hounds has max 150 HP.

Yeah....i haven't found mandrakes.........i always get blue whales......i guess its back to monkeys i go. Hope the forest doesn't burn down.

The sea hound idea works very well, and they won't attack your boats. Just make sure that they've all become aggressive on you before you send Abigail on them because otherwise they'll swim away and roam around your base island.

You won't get as many teeth from the sea hounds however. Remember that special hounds (red and white) drop 2 hound's teeth ALWAYS, but for normal hounds the drop rate is fairly low. There are no special variants of sea hounds, and so the drop rate remains very low for them.

On my Wickerbottom game (Day 158) I've been slowly setting up a tooth trap area.  But next to that I have three Lureplants set up and those thin the hound herd quite nicely.  I just kill and replant the Lureplants immediately after the battle to make sure I get the loot.

Hmm...my island is quite small (since half of it is monkeys) . I just kill the lureplants.

LUCKILY, on my day 101 hound attack, a lot of monkeys froze, giving me time to snatch some stuff. Also somehow abigail started killing the monkeys, and i stole the teeth.

 

Now i have 15 teeth, not enough for 12 hounds though..i'll use monkeys till i get enough.

 

Also, do red hounds ONLY spawn in volcano season? If so, i'll use the sea hound trick.

I know two ways of dealing it.

1) Tanking

Spear+ log suit x 2~3 +fooball helmet + healing items. It cost a lot but you can get through it.

 

2) Minimum damage

a) Find a peninsula and set up your defend there as show in the screenshot. This will force the hounds to spawn and come at you from 1 direction only, and reduce the maximum number of hounds reaching you at a time. (So, no more 5 hounds running towards you from all direction at the same time)

b) Use cutlass supreme/fresh make ham bat/ dark sword to kill hounds in two hits.

c) Set up lines of tooth traps. Tooth isn't as easy to farm in SW so I dont use traps field. Instead, use it as a way to delay/stun hounds when you face more than 2 hounds. Land some hits while the hounds are stunned.

d) a boat, in case you mess up.

BTW, since you are playing as Wendy, during the day you can use Abigail to tank the hounds. You must however grab a spear and help Abigail while she take the beating. If you act fast in killing the hounds Abigail can survive(with very low HP left). Evening and night time, abigail can kill them all alone.

 

Sea hounds won't attack your boat while you are on land, so your method works too.
