Thoughts on Shipwrecked from the perspective of a new player.

Recommended Posts

I'm confused as to why veterans of Don't Starve seem to be of the opinion that Shipwrecked is harder than RoG. I scan through the threads, and find thread after thread asking for things to be nerfed, be it the seasons or just things like poison. It's a shame, because I only really became interested in DS (Despite owning the game since it first came out) thanks to Shipwrecked, but despite being, for the most part, a complete beginner to the game, I had relatively little difficulty getting to day 56 (which is where I'm at currently, still alive and well).

For Shipwrecked to be harder, then RoG must be incredibly easy.

Anyway, I'm going to give a brief overview of how I found the game. Bare in mind that this was pretty much the first serious run I've done in the game.

All the days up until Hurricane season are incredibly easy. Much easier than the very short amount of time i spent playing the start of the base game. Snakes are too weak, I feel they need something to separate them from being spider clones.

Hurricane season for me was...somewhat tense. Does anybody know if this season was buffed? Because I've watched two people play (They got the game early if I recall) and their hurricane season was a joke compared to mine, with barely any wind/rain/big waves happening. Mine built up for a few days with just a bit of rain and wind here and there, before I had to endure like 8 days of almost constant rain and wind with the sea being quite treacherous to cross.
Of course, this could have felt harder to me because I'm new to the game and at this point, I was still just learning some basic crap. Lightning ended up burning some key structures in my base which set me back a fair bit along with the constant need for grass which was far away from my base posed an issue.

If I were to play again (Which I will be doing because SW is fun as ****), I doubt that this season will cause anywhere near the pain that it caused on my first run though.

Perhaps putting something into the game to tempt the player to travel through the rough waters more during this season would be a good addition.

Monsoon season was just disappointingly easy. Aesthetically, I love the season. I love the idea of it too, but....I'm not seeing where the challenge of this season comes from. I mean, Hurricane season pretty much forced me to make water resistant gear, so by time this season rolled around, I was completely prepared for it.

Woo the floor is wet. Big deal.

I don't know, maybe I'm missing something but this season honestly felt like a walk in the park compared to the Hurricane one to me. I've been able to forage with impunity during it without any issues, almost like the first 20 days of the game.

I'd like to make a suggestion on how to make this season more threatening, but I can't think of anything. Maybe...make it so your snakeskin gear doesn't render you immune to getting wet from walking in puddles? I mean after all, that seems to be one of the big threats they were going for for this season, no?

I have yet to get to the next season but hopefully it kicks things up a notch, because I'm feeling pretty invincible at the moment. I've got a system set up that pretty much means I'll never have to worry about food again, and I've got a plethora of healing items, so I don't really know what the game plans on doing to stop me. I should probably clarify that the feeling of complete safety that I have right now is not something I enjoy. I want the game to make me panic to manage resources like the last 10 days of hurricane season did. Sanity was always low, kept needing to travel across the ocean to gather grass/twigs/stone, hunger constantly being an issue.

I can't help but feel that all of the threads asking to nerf this and nerf that are going about this the wrong way. The entire point of a game like this is obviously to try to survive. What fun is there in that if the game is piss easy?

If I had it my way, I'd make food scarcer, snakes stronger, monsoon season leagues harder, the sea more dangerous (and interesting), and even hurricane season more difficult, because despite the problems it caused me, I still survived through it on my first attempt, and as I've said a million times already, I'm an amateur at this game, so that seems a bit strange.

Interested to know what the veterans think of my opinions, because I'm going to have to play Wes at this point when I actually unlock him if I want some challenge.

Yeah I really do think that having an umbrella shouldn't protect you from standing in a puddle that's probably up to your knees.

And yeah. I also agree that in general once you've figured out your ways of handling the seasons the game gets pretty easy from there on out, there's not toooooo much that'll come along and put a serious threat on you as far as I've seen. The seasons could definitely use a little rebalancing and we're all eager to see some new challenges as the updates roll out.

I'd love to see new things that I've made other threads for like seasonal sea hounds (monsoon season ones will emit poison gas perhaps for an example), whirlpools out in the seas during the stormy season, things of that nature.

- I think that all those complaining to make game easy are new / unexperienced players

- IMO not everyones feedback should have same value but i hope Klei know it

- If this game is easy for you as beginner then Klei failed with SW (for now)

- i remember my first couple runs in vanilla DS as new player and i died ALL THE TIME and didnt even get to winter and i ENJOY DIYNG!!! This way i had to think what to do next or how to prepare, what to kill, how to change my style of playing to survive even one more day. After i enter winter or caves or ruins i died a lot again and this made it fun. With ROG again constant dying and figuring stuff out.

- in SW i died only to unlock Walabali .)

EDIT:

I want the game to make me panic

This was and still is best feature of DS/ROG!

you don't have to die to unlock new characters, using the teleportato will give you experience in and of itself :p (just in case you didn't know, you probably do though, just thought I'd mention it)

Veterans aren't saying for things to be nerfed, beginners and/or inexperienced players are.  The Veterans are saying its "harder" cause off the bat, blind, it is.  Veteran players are in this comfortable spot of never dying anymore.  Even when RoG was introduced it took very little to adapt to the new game.  Shipwrecked on the other hand is a COMPLETELY different experience along the lines of everything from how you explore to where you base.  Then there are these 3 new seasons that you have no idea what to expect the first time through.  Veterans aren't saying its harder like its a bad thing, in fact quite the opposite.  It has been a VERY long time since Don't Starve has put up any sort of challenge and the game is fun again because veterans for the first time in a long while don't know what to expect.

Nobody ever said it is hard.

People just want the dumb rain and volcanoes and what not nerfed because they affect how you play the game a bit too much and not in an enjoyable way.

If you play Don't Starve to dodge fireballs for hours on end then sure, but I'm sure most people don't.

I want the difficulty to come from things like Giants .... not lame crap weather effects.

The whole SW is about being bombarded by tedium.

Monsoon season is depending on how many puddles spawn in your base very easy or annoying as s***.

In my first monsoon 8 puddles spawned in my base and made every structure besides my tent,

lightning rod and chests useless, because the puddles spawned under my, alchemy engine, crockpot, shadow manipulator, etc. when the puddles spawned I had also a hound wave,

so there was no time to prevent the puddles from spreading.

So I had to build most of my key structures again, what destroyed my "pretty" base layout,

the most important thing for an insane hermit,

while constantly driven crazy by the mosquitos noises + wetness and poison,

but the noises where the worst after 10 days.

In my second and third world only 1-2 puddles spawned near my base (not under it)

and monsoon season was a cake walk...so there have to be some tweeks,

because at the moment it is way to random as a challenge, atleast for my taste.
