[Idea] Low Sanity should spawn Ghostpirates

Recommended Posts

Another one of my ideas this time reagarding Sanity. As it stands we only have the Insanity mobs from the basegame but i though that we might want something more thematic instead. So my idea Ghostpirates.

These fellows would work on the same basemechanics as the normal insanity mobs whereby you can only see them when your sanity is low enought. However they behave slightly different then both Faceless Horrors or Terrorbeaks.

Ghostpirates don't care for your puny life as long as you don't carry any gold or Dubloons with you but as soon as you have some they will become aggressive towards you. However you can appease them by dropping your dubloons/gold and they will ignore you again. Now you ask yourself "why would i want to fight them?" simple they have a bunch of unique drops you want.

First and obviously formost you got Nightmarefuel but that's just the tip of the Iceberg. They also have a chance to drop beardhair (at least if the ghost got a beard) a Ghostly Cutlass (alternative to the Sword of Darkness), Dubloons or a Piratehat.

Ghostpirates also appear in different locations with different behaviours both docile and in battle. On land Ghostpirates will walk around and dig up any sandpile they see in the hopes of finding treasures. However they also can dig up X-Spots possibly prevent you from getting the riches of the chest. On sea Ghostpirates drive small spectral vessels and can shot at the player with ghostly cannons. Killing a ghostpirateship also drops a bigger amount of loot (mostly Nightmarefuel).

But there is even more in the vein of a Bossenemy. This one would basicly be a big Ghostpirateship with multiple cannons and a small crew of pirates sorounding it (about 4 Ghostships). Once you sank this mighty vessel you are rewarded with a big amount of loot including Dubloons, Nightmarefuel and the 2 bossdrops those being the Skeletal Parrot a Undead familair that attacks enemys and can't be killed of for good (he revives once no enemys are around him) and the Ghostly Sail what is used to create the Flying Dutchman ship on the Shadow Manipulator. This would be a ship what moves faster then any other ship but also has the ability to cross through solid land as well as ignoring the waves on the ocean (to get of it you just rightclick on land instead of leftclicking).

Just another of my random thoughs and it would be more fitting then the current insanity mobs. Obviously you could also have a few more mobs accompany the pirates (as well as having a Captain boss) but i can't think of a good idea for them at this point.

I just read the title and the idea is brilliant haha

going to read the text now

- Edit -

read it, the idea is really awesome, i think it would fit perfectly for "sea nightmare monsters" since i think is a little weird that there is none made just for the sea, crawling horrors keep jesus-cosplaying walking over the water.

even if as a mod I loved it and the ghost almighty ship could be something like a boss found randomly or in set pieces, maybe working like the obelisks? it is just a wrecked big ship if your sane but as soon as you get insane ghost pirates emerge from the depths and take over it xD

I love this idea! Point to clarify - when you drop the gold to pacify the ghosts, do they steal it? Presumably so, as that would give you a dilemma, drop and lose the gold, or be forced to fight ghost pirates. I should think they like gems too.

Love this idea too!

The sight of good ideas... it fills me with determination!

I like the idea of new shadow creatures with aggro mechanics alike the beardlords, but in this case, gold being the trigger.

But, about this boss, he would only appear when the sanity gets low too?

Someone posted awhile ago about pirates in SW. I can imagine pirates or ghost pirates, but not exactly human pirates. I don't know, in Don't Starve there are no humans besides the characters, right? You fight everything but humans.

Maybe if they were skeletons? Ghost-pirate-skeletons haha

maybe those classic Green-Glowing skeletons with partial ruined armor and swords haha

That was the idea glowing ghastly skeletons.

And yes the boss would be low sanity too what would be new and interesting because in Vanilla DS an RoG there really is no big reason to go insane other then getting 2 special drops (Nightmare Fuel and Beardhair) but with a boss tied to it you actually want to make the sea a bit more dangerous to the player so he has the possibilitys to encounter the boss and get the unique drops that it provides.

I freaking love this idea and it is so elegantly written to! Pirates all the way!  :wilson_pirate:

But if this gets added I hope that doesn't close off the possiblity of other insanity creatures being added to, I want a whole damn ecosystem of insanity monsters!  :wilson_horror:

This is a great idea! Reminds me of LoZ: Windwaker were you have to find a pirate ship chart and visit the correct location during night.

I also really want ghost whales.  :ghost:

Would they be giant, glowing, transparent and skeletal  or just glowing and transparent? :wilson_dorky:

It really depends how they want to do the artwork. I feel like the skeletal structure of a whale is pretty creepy looking, so it depends on how much they want to portray it realistically. That said, if it was skeletal it could drop whale bones, which could be used for powerful items or a replacement of the walrus tusk for the walking cane. I wont mind which way they decide to portray it though, as I feel they should just try to stick to the aesthetic of the game as a whole.

Edit: Here's what a whale skeleton looks like if anyone is curious. Creepy if you ask me.blue_whale_lg.jpg

Hey that sounds great, you know what since you´re on ilands they should put another method to recover sanity other than the sand castles, they could let you craft a companion like Wilson from cast away, like a coconut with some seaweed or vines i know there are a ton of methods to recover sanity but that would be the most hilarious in my opinion.

Indeed :D Add teeth, for a sperm whale, which are the dangerous kind (and presumably the ones the in-game whales are based on). But humpback whales make the most haunting sounds, so I'm torn...

Imagine a thing like this coming at you in the sea making humpback noises :o And your sanity would start dropping as soon as you heard the song, but you wouldn't know where the whale was coming from at first...

And then the water would start to glow greenish, like the bioluminescence...

And then the whale appears, a ghastly dripping skeleton, fleeing before the spectral pirate ship which is hunting it!

I think this should only happen on full moon nights.
