Palm Tree Guards kiting method

Recommended Posts

So, I've found that the fighting mechanism used to fight tree guards in Don't Starve is non-existent in Shipwrecked. They don't go away when you plant coconuts, and fighting them is nearly impossible unless you have a long-ranged weapon like the boomerang or the darts.

Is it on purpose that you can't kite them, and that their hit-range is so large, or is this under development?

Also, am I the only one with this problem?

I've had this problem as well, I plant 20+ coconuts and had no effect. The only thing I've been able to do is get them distracted by another hostile creature such that they're non agro afterwards. I've also noticed they always spawn in threes? Is everyone having that happen?

Same for me. I guess they will change that, I hope at least. I had pigs chopping some palm trees, after killing the pigs they ignored me and stood around doing nothing. I tried to kill them, but kiting isnt possible.

The coconut thing is confirmed as a bug. The coconut is supposed to pacify creatures with the "treeguard" tag, but there's a mistake in the code: the palm-treeguards are tagged "lief" (which is the same as regular treeguards) instead of "treeguard". That'll be fixed soon.

You CAN kite them, just have to do it a little different.

The attack timer for their melee attack and ranged attack seems to be the same, this means that if you go in right after they throw the coconuts, attack 1-2 times, and then run you can be far enough away that they will throw rather than swipe (which can be dodged easily).

I found you can just tank them with a football helmet and the seashell chainmail - it doesn't take very long and you won't take much damage. Their coconut projectiles hit much harder than the melee attack, I think (tbh I'm not sure, it just seemed that way when I fought them).

I killed 3 of them playing as Wendy, without Abigail's help - I'm sure most characters can take them down pretty easily. Basically I failed to kite and saw they weren't doing much damage so I just went at it.

I've actually found the best way to kill them is with fire if you don't mind losing the living trees and coconut drops. You can lure them to walk through a raging camp fire or through anything burning (like grass or bamboo), just not a firepit since they're 'safer'. They'll even keep catching each other on fire when one of them starts to go out.

Since the boars were buffed they're also able to kill guards if you have a couple attack one guard.

It's actually quite simple to kill them (i play as Wendy, killed 3 in 2 days with a spear and no abigail)

Just keep some distance, when they pull some coconuts, go and hit them 5 times. Go back. Wait for coconut animation, hit 5 times. Rinse and repeat. If with 3 thats too difficult, use some jungle tree seeds to pacify and kill them one by one.

Jungle seeds or coconuts?

In the past coconuts didn't work but I haven't tried them again since the update and I didn't even think to try jungle seeds.

Jungle seeds work in pacifying them and their melee damage is VERY less, just get a Football helmet and a log suit and fight them out.

as of right now it also seems that a lot of palm tree guards spawn at once so better be prepared and only use jungle trees for wood.

playing the panflute will pacify them all once they spawned after some tree chopping and they don't seem to care, if you keep chopping while they're around.

you did trawl through the ocean many times before and hoarded up multiple flutes, right?

if you have no use for living logs, it might be a good idea to keep them around so they can deal with hound attacks or kill snakes because snakes seem to aggro on everything that comes close.

You can go in and score 8 hits ya pansies. Not this weak weak 2-5 hit stuff! As stated before, if you don't care about the drops, campfires work great. Pigs also deal with them quite well if you've got any handy. The melee combat technique required for killing them without taking damage is unique and honestly quite fun, I hope it never gets changed.
