Colour Cubes

Can someone explain to me the concept of colour cubes? I've seen them around quite a bit, but I can't figure out what exactly they do.

Like an overlay? Things like different colours at different phases? What else are they used in?

I'm pretty sure it just changes the tint of your screen. Kind of like how the screen is kinda yellow during summer and feels more blue/white during winter, and also red during dusk.

I think it's also what makes the screen feel black and white when sanity is low.

I'm pretty sure that's all they are used for.

I beleive the beaver screen is just an actual image layed over the screen, like the blood-over screen. I remember seeing an image file for it somewhere.
