Need help and preparations for the Dragonfly (and other stuff for summer)

Summer is comming and I wanted to ask what preparations I need to make. I think it's only 2 or 1 days until summer and I have an umrbrella, an eyebrella with around 47% (but I have a sewing kit somewhere in my base), 2 Ice Flingomatics where I need them the most, a siesta lean-to in my base, a summer frest, tons of ice and a cool thermal stone in my fridge. Is that enough to survive the summer?

Another thing which bothers me is the fact that the dragonfly exists, fueled by it's unstopable rage and pyromania which can only be stilled by setting everything under the sun and the moon ablaze until it's burnt to a pathetic crisp. That wouldn't be so bad if me and my base would be fireproof, but that's only something I can dream of. What do I need to do? I have one gunpowder, a spear, some armor and that's it. I have never met the Dragonfly but I'm already scared half to death by it's sheer existence. It looks like it's pretty hard to fight and I have neither the strategy nor the weapons to defeat it! And this might come of as a surprise, but I'm not really keen of the idea to be burnt to death by a huge, lava puking Insect. Help me guys, I don't know what to do!

Gunpowder isn't that hard to make, if you have access to Rotten Eggs and Nitre, make 13 more, then place a stack of 20 Ash on the ground near the Dragonfly and, after eating it, the giant will sleep. Placing the Gunpowder stack next to its head and lighting it up is an instant kill.

However, if you need to do it with your arms, I'd recommend trapping the Dragonfly between two rocks (with enough space so you can pass in the middle, but, for comparison, a koalefant can't) and kiting it. Note: kiting it takes a very long time, since you can only hit it once per cycle, so having an Endothermic Pit is probably good.

Next to kiting + getting stuck and gunpowder, you can also use the old bell. It would take you three hits. But, I strongly recommend putting it to sleep with 20 ashes and then killing it with 14 gunpowder. If you have access to the resources, go for it.

If nothing else, you can also feed it the 20 ashes and then leave. No loot, but the creature won't bother you anymore either. The dragonfly is hard to fight, but extremely easy to get rid off by just putting it to sleep with cheap ash. Go kill some butterflies for it (and get a shot at butter to make ice cream or waffles while you're at it).

Fix that eyebrella and you should have everything you need to survive summer. Eyebrella + four ice will get you through one day without overheating. I'm only missing two things in your story.

  • What is your plan for fire hounds? Ice flingomatics can take care of their fire, but there's a limit to how much they can manage at once ánd it needs to happen within their range.
  • Do you've got fuel arrangements for those ice flingomatics? They can take whatever fire pits can take but you have to have something.

1. I have a special "Arena" for hounds with lots of tooth traps. Hounds are no problem for me, no matter if they burn or freeze after death.

2. I just put whatever I got in them.

If you got a couple of thermal stones and a fridge, you practically can't overheat anymore. The eyebrella helps a lot though.

As for fire protection, you need to assure fuel for the ice flingons, even in the extreme case of a fire hound burning your log stash (never keep all chests together, don't) Trust me, a kamikaze butterfly once set my trees on fire, which in turn left me without enough fuel for the firepit and the already poorly powered flingons.

Dragonfly got covered pretty well already, so I'll skip that. Also I never even survived it so far, despite all tips.

Make sure you have a safe place to run to when hounds come. Will you be there within 30 seconds? Is back-up equipment there? Do you have a miner hat or endothermic firepit there? Is there surely no burnables in immediate range?

  1. Then that should be alright. Mobbstar's got a few good tips to doublecheck the quality of your field, but overall you seem to have it covered.
  2. I'm a bit hesitant about this answer. Ice flingomatics are expensive to maintain, so I hope that "whatever you've got" is plentiful. I usually aim to make a stash of bed rolls and Glommer's Goop before summer to cover my expenses myself. Each IF takes about one of those per two days.

Also, just to be certain you've got your food supplies covered because I misunderstood this my first few summers too: ice flingomatics keep your plants in top shape, not your crops. If you want crops, you need to manually fertilize them and pick them asap, or they'll wither and become grass. Maybe you know that already, but just to be certain.

An eyebrella and summer frest are almost enough to run around all day and evening on the hottest midsummer days without overheating.  Almost.  You'll need to either use the umbrella as well, switch to a floral shirt, carry a refreshing snack with you to cool down, stand under a tree, siesta during the day and run about during evening and night, or only spend most of the day running around but return to your endothermic fire pit an hour early.  Any one of those things will do.  Personally, I spend summer gathering tumbleweeds in the desert (nothing much around for the dragonfly to destroy) with just a frest and eyebrella, and I equip the umbrella and run back to camp if the overheating warning starts.  Haven't even prototyped a thermal stone in my newest world and that's up to day 861.  It'd be more useful with Snow Chester, but I've never transformed Chester.  I'm not spending 9 blue gems until I can consistently remember to keep him away from giants.

Alternatively, you can live in the caves during summer.

"Never keep all chests together, don't" Oops, too late! Doesn't really help that all the walls in my base are made of wood

1. No, but that doesn't really matter because they'll follow me

2. It's a 5 second run from my base to teh arena, so yes I guess?

3. I'm planning to build one

4. My base is pretty near and made of wood, but I'm not that dumb, so no, there isn't

I've got a glommer in my base, beefallos are just a walk away, trees etc. are not that far away and I always have something to burn in my inventory be it a 40 stack of cut grass or twigs, there's more than enough in my surrounding

Then that sounds like you're set. Good luck and do report back how it went!

Heard the dragonfly

Got scared

Ran to the other side of the island

Gave it 20 ashes

Dragonfly puked

Dragonfly fell asleep

I ran away

Dragonfly despawned

Your preparations for summer is better than me. I always have an umbrella, straw hat, floral shirt and a thermal stone. And I always have the ingredients for at least 4-5 ice cream.

For the dragonfly,I have a ready marble suit,2xfootball helmets,a tentacle spike and 10 healing salves.

I mostly wander around and pick things in summer.
