I've been hearing about new players complaining about the lack of experiance you have when being thrown into a world. So, how about a tutorial? It would be replayable, it would be as Wilson, and it would show you basic mechanics.

In your inventory you would have a "Grand Book of Surviving". This shows all the tips you have been given if you need to revisit them. In tutorial mode, you play for 10 days and you lose health and hunger at half the normal rate/amount. Tips would be initiated by triggers such as hounds appearing or being low on hunger. After 10 days you would earn 50 XP, but you can't get the XP by repeating the tutorial. Tips bring up a page in the book by the way.

Tips:

Learning controls: triggered when Maxwell's speech ends.

"Poor Wilson, grow up, stop crawling around and learn to walk you big baby! Help Wilson regain his former abilities! Click on the ground to move there. On the other hand, you could also use WASD controls on your keyboard to move Wilson about. Now get some excercise!"

Gathering: triggered after 15 seconds of walking.

"Good job! You can walk! Did you know you can also collect resources and examine objects? Try it, just click on some of nature's wonders! Try getting some twigs by clicking on a sapling and some flint by exploring the area and picking it up!"

Inventory: triggered by getting 1 twig and flint stone.

"Nice! Look try looking at your inventory, it's the bar on the bottom of the screen. It holds any items you collect. And yes, a few days from now you'll be holding all sorts of stuff in there! Maybe even smelly dung!"

Crafting: triggered 6 seconds after getting 1 twig and flint stone.

"Congratulations! See that bar to the left? That's your magical menu of crafting! Try finding mousing over the various areas, you will unlock more of those as time goes on. Find "Tools", unsurprisingly, it's the one with the tools on it's icon. Try crafting a mighty axe!"

I really don't like the idea of tutorials in this game. Most of the fun in survival games is learning stuff on your own as you progress in days. The only thing I would think maybe needs a little more of a "warning" (not a tutorial) is the first hound attack. I think Wilson should say something like "those barks are getting louder..." And then post attack just state "I have a funny feeling that Ill be seeing plenty more hounds". This is just further hints to new players that should prepare themselves for a battle.

What Flash said is not just the opinion of the people, you should really dfo some background research before making a suggestion. The creators of the game themselves had specifically stated that they purposely put no tutorial in the game, since they wanted people to figure out things as they go. Of course, they can't stop wiki's, but most of us hardcorers refuse to use them anyway. Real men find out about dangerous things by dying.

A lot.

Goddamit I should have used a wiki.

Anyways, no tutorials. Ever. Nuuuup.

It was a good idea and you seem to put some work in to it, but the point of the game is for you to try new things and I actually really like it. It was spoiled a little bit for me as I found out how to play the game through watching youtube videos, but I love the aspect of being shoved into a world, told nothing on how to play and given one objective.

Survive.

But yeah, I guess we'll let this thread die :p
