XirmiX
It has occurred to me that basalts were used as placeholders before sinkholes were added in single player Don't Starve. However, this is not the case for DST; there's just blank spaces! It will be a drag for DST players to make new worlds just to get the cave and ruin content for their world or they'll have to spawn the sibkholes in once caves and ruins are added. Also, may I mention that I've suggested this before: may be the caves and ruins can be added in a way so that when the first person to enter one, activates its generation. I do not understand why this could not be implemented. While caves and ruins are supposedly in another world, that doesn't mean that it can't be done with a simple idea and turn it to work within the code. I really do not see what's so difficult about this. Is the real problem with having multiple worlds running on the same server for different players, which could potentially cause lag and rubberbanding or even crashes? And really, why aren't the basalts put in as placeholders? It worked with single player, why wouldn't it work with multiplayer?
Pyromailmann
It couldn't be implemented because a server can't hold 2 worlds (especially large worlds).Heck, I don't think it can support the Caves, Ruins, and Overworld all running at the same time. Tumalu
Adding caves would literally double the load on the server, along with a plethora of other complications. The issue is not making them -function-, the issue is making it actually realistically playable in a multiplayer setting.
Rosten
Aren't caves already generated upon being first entered?
Pyromailmann
Aren't caves already generated upon being first entered?Yes.But the problem is, that the game can't run 2 worlds at once.I guess the same could be said about dedicated servers. But hey, I know nothing about Computer Science. XirmiX
What if each time a new world is created (be it a cave, overworld through teleportato, ruins, adventure mode) a new server is linked, so that you would have your own so called "don't starve universe" runned by multiple servers! Would that not be a possibility? Because if you move into a new world through teleportato, other people might be falling behind if they've joined before but have not been in the world during the time you moved to the next world. And say you move 2 worlds ahead. You're in overworld 3, as to say, while everyone else is in overworld 1 of your don't starve universe. Nobody is in the overworld 2, so to keep away the troubles, the people who then go through teleportato from overworld 1 to the next overworld, would skip overworld 2 and go straight to overworld 3 to meet with the host, giving space for future servers to be hosted! Could that not be done?

This isn't easy, though, and right now they have people working on RoG, people working on dedicated servers, people working on optimization, people working on Through the Ages, etc.

I've just lost track of the streams and on mobile twitch doesn't work for me, so unless they upload every single stream on youtube just minutes after finished with streaming, I'll have my mind jumbled with the streams.
