Spider Warriors

Recommended Posts

As we all know, it is no longer possible to clear tier 3 spider dens without ever fighting a spider warrior anymore. (If this is just a bug, this post is useless lol) It certainly does try to add a level of difficulty to fighting spider dens. However, I mostly find it pointless. Why?

-If it is meant to increase the difficulty of taking down a den, two people can easily take down one spider warrior without taking any damage, and as one usually spawns, this is not a new level of difficulty, just another spider to kill. It does not add any new challenge to coordination or teamwork either.

-In addition, I usually tackle spider hunting alone. I play with my friends and I am the most experienced of the lot, so I generally just collect all resources and basically carry my group. I am sure other server hosts also have spent time trying to farm resources to help new players. Therefore, as it is only performed by one person, it should not have new gameplay mechanics, especially if the ones implemented do not really cause a problem.

-Maybe this means that we are forced to gather silk and monster meat in groups, but at most one would take 1 hit from a spider warrior before it dies, making it only a slight annoyance and easily reversible after one uses all those spider glands that they just farmed

-I believe that Klei stated that they view spiders more as a resource than a mob to fight. Taking down nests is just a way of gathering resources, and therefore(if I recall correctly) they stated that they would not change spider mechanics. Because I see spiders as resources, I usually gather them alone. (This also applies to my previous point; taking down nests is a singleplayer action)

Essentially, the change to spider dens implemented is nothing more than a minor inconvenience, and should be either reverted to normal, or if spider dens are now seen as more of a challenge to fight, should be increased in difficulty.

That is incorrect. Try pulling the spiders further away from the nest before attacking them. This method was not changed at all, but in DST lag may cause you to appear to be further than you are, if you still have action prediction on. Apart from lag, taking on spider dens alone is exactly like it is in single-player.

I'm not sure if it's a bug, but every single time (in the last week+) I've attacked a 3-tier after killing the 9 regular spiders that pop out, a warrior spider appears. I walk on and off and run circles around the nest and nothing comes out, but even if I hit it right after killing the last regular spider, a warrior pops. Could be a client-lag thing.

Ohh, I see. That does sound like a bug... I'll have to do some testing and looking at the code to see if it also happens for me and how it ends up occurring. I remember looking briefly before and it seemed like the idea wasn't to have the den actually have more spiders as a result of being attacked by (multiple) people, but just to send out more of the spiders that it did have. So if you kill all of the spiders, then it still has two warriors in reserve when you hit the nest, that would be unintended, I think.

Reinforcements!

I don't mind the last 1-2 warrior spiders. It might even be 1 warrior spider in reserve per person. I attacked a 3-tier last night with someone else (after killing the regulars) and 2 warriors popped for me for the first time. But if that's intended, I think it would make people less likely to attack dens in groups.

Or could it be that the more people are present, the faster the spawning... they did say that the Spider Queen became more fertile to deal with the human threat... so maybe the same applied to the dens... I tried to do this with just me on LAN and it seems that that's the case...

Yes, I think when I try to take it down with another person, even more spider warriors spawn, but then I do not see the reason why they would make more for just one person
