Living Logs and Nightlight

Recommended Posts

Okay so this might have been answered before, but I want to suggest it anyway.

Currently the Nightlight can only accept Nightmare Fuel or FuelType.Nightmare. Living Logs in my opinion are a much harder resource to obtain than Nightmare Fuel especially in Don't Starve Together. In Don't Starve Together a single character can go insane and allow their friends to slaughter nightmare creatures all day and night long and obtain large amounts of fuel. However, to obtain Living Logs you must first chop down a forest and hope for a spawn of Treeguards.

So here are my suggestions.

  • Allow Living Logs to be used as a fuel source for Nightlights.
  • Allow Living Logs to drop Nightmare Fuel when being burnt instead of dropping ash.
  • Add a refining recipe that allows us to extract Nightmare Fuel from the Living Logs at a 1:2 ratio. 1 Nightmare Fuel per 2 Living Logs.

I understand that I could just create a mod adding these suggestions into the game, however, I feel that any of the above suggestions make sense from a base game perspective rather than a mod perspective.

But... as I see it, the problem with the night light is that, even including the method you described, it's still just so much worse than any other light source. It consumes a red gem that you could've used for an amulet, it uses nightmare fuel which you can spend on better things generally, and it also has a sanity drain. If I remember correctly, it was considered by many to be the worst item in the game in single-player, and I don't think that the new DST fuel farming method changes that-- it's harder than just camping the ruins with a bush hat in single-player. So in it's current state, the night light might as well not be in the game.

Your suggestion would give more options for fueling the night light, and obtaining nightmare fuel, but all of those options are worse than the existing options. Living logs are valuable for making dark swords, among other things, and nightmare fuel can be obtained more easily. So when you add a strictly inferior option to the game, I'd say it's just a waste of time. If it's strictly inferior, it might as well not be there, except to confuse new players who are trying to figure out what in the world it could be used for.

@rezecib, you do bring up some good points, but I disagree that it's completely useless. It just has a lot of things working against it which makes it seem under powered compared to camp fires and fire pits. The sanity drain is also not noticeable by myself or my wife, we wear Top Hats from the silk we got from our spider farms, which are killed from our tooth traps.

Besides this possible oversight I'm not sure what else could be done to make them better.

@rezecib, this topic isn't about the usefulness of the Nightlight, it's about wondering why Living Logs are not considered a fuel type which can be used to fuel the Nightlight.

If we are wanting to discuss the usefulness of the Nightlight we should create a separate topic.

If you want, you could suggest that they bring back the method of lighting... light... sources with the firestaff...

Back in RoG, (2000+ days in :3) i littered the road leading to my base with night lights and used them as... well... street lamps... with one shot from the firestaff, (consuming 1/50 uses and lighting it to tier 2... but you can then just add 1 nightmarefuel to put it to its maximum...) a nightlight lasts about as long as I keep the game on... when I exit and come back again, the light disappears...

but this is only in the case that you have a very reliable source of red gems aside from the constant "hounding", probably spawn a "hound mound" somewhere (most suitably a rocky biome... but thats just me) and camping there during summer and hope a Fire hound spawns... other than that... idk (or just spawn the red gems but that's just too... ugh)

but then there's a bug that lighting Night Lights using this method will sometimes crash the game... so... think about it O_O
