Co-Op: Sending items between distant players via bird

Recommended Posts

I have a suggestion for a future item. This idea occurred between me and my friends as we were playing Don't Starve Together.

It would be really awesome if you could send goods between distant players on DST. Carrier pigeons were definitely a thing. In Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, they use ravens to send messages. DST even already has birds, too!

Adding the ability to send goods between players via bird (crafting: bird, rope, nightmare fuel for control?) could be a really cool and very useful thing for multiplayer co-op specifically. Sending food or supplies from base to distant friends who are off exploring the world, sending supplies back to free inventory space as one player explores...

It seems necessary to include a timing delay based on the players' distances from each other. Insta-birds across enormous maps would be a little overpowered. If timing is an issue, the birds could simply arrive half a day after they're sent. That way, they always take some time, no matter how far the players are from one another. You can use them to send stuff when you have to (e.g., your explorer is in an area with little food or has an overflowing inventory or has some items that have to go back to camp ASAP) but you can't use them as instant pneumatic shipping tubes.

In PvP, maybe "birdgrams" are a way to attack? Like putting a bee bomb or gunpowder into the bird's inventory. To make attacks less obvious, maybe random carrier bird arrivals can be added, sometimes holding really good stuff (I'd open every bird I got regardless of attack potential if I knew I could get rare/hard-to-get items).

Thanks for your time and your games, they're awesome and so are you!

I really like this idea! I hope this ends up in the multiplayer "Through The Ages" DLC that they're making.

But would it just be, catch a bird, give items to it, and boom, it delivers? I think there should be a thing you attach to the bird, maybe a tiny chest that sit on the bird's back that has 1 slot, maybe made with 1 board, 1 rope, and maybe something else not to make it too cheap.

Maybe different birds have different abilities, perhaps crows can carry more, but are slower, redbirds and snowbirds, carry less but are quicker?

Overall, good idea

I've heard that idea on a klei twitch stream, and I wanted to implement it, but I've not modded for ages on don't starve, and I guess it's harder to mod on DST. First I'm going to play a lot on DST and when I'll get bored, i'll go modding. :p

(I'm kidding btw for the mod idea stealer, if it can be done I'm happy : D)

Erm...why not just make seperate bases on each side of a wormhole and drop items into the wormhole to give them to your friend? That's much simpler, already implemented, and doesn't require any resources.

Did you even read the entire suggestion? He/she said it could be used for sending people who are exploring resources and food, use them to attack other players, or just transporting resources. It's not expensive to make a bird trap.

And it would be a hassle for both people to set up right near a worm hole, what are the chances that both sides of the wormhole are good spots for bases?

First I suggest this be used with only Crows, A crow is an extremely intelligent bird, therefore it would make more sense if we were only able to use Crows for deliveries

Why not add a few new combinations for this as well?

First, a new type of Cage, call it a Carrier Cage (No idea on a recipe)

Each cage could be labeled with Papyrus, that way you have a designated place for the Crow to deliver to.

Crow + Rope + Nightmare Fuel + 3 Planks = Care Crow (Crow with the equivalent of a chest, when delivered the items would be deposteted in the closest Chest to the Carrier Cage, if the chests are too full, or there is no chest around, a chest would be placed within 4 spaces of the Carrier Cage, if there are no adequate spaces within those 4 spaces the chest would be placed in the closest hospitable space.)

Crow + Rope + Nightmare Fuel + Papyrus = Messenger Crow (Crow that would carry a note)

Once a Crow has been sent on a delivery, the crow will then sit on the closest Carrier Cage, waiting for the delivery to be dealt with, the player can then place the crow back in the Carrier Cage.

You have to remake each type of delivery Crow, but you keep the Crow itself after each use. The crow would also have a set Durability, 10 deliveries and it dies, leaving an uncooked Morsel next to the Carrier Cage.

The idea is you would make your Crow, give it a destination (Input the Carrier Cage label) and the crow would fly to that location.

I would also like to add some randomness to this idea, the Crow has a 10% chance of being killed during the delivery, if this happens the Delivery itself will be placed somewhere between the two fixed points.

Carrier Cage = 3 Living Logs (same number as a chest that use 3 boards to craft) + 1 Feather Hat (Attracts flying birds) + 4 Moon Rock (landing spot) / required Prestihatitator to prototype / can store max 1 stack of sent item / no durability (unlimited uses) / bird will die after used and drop respective loots as if you murder them

Messenger Bird = 1 bird + 1 Papyrus + 1 Rope / required Prestihatitator to prototype / can send item to closest Carrier Cage or random location (most likely it will landing on the seeds) by use it and select an item / 1 usage
