suggestion: make the fire from torch, lighter and ghost isn't spreadable

Dr. Breen: Allow me to address your underlying concerns, rather than try to answer every question you may have left unvoiced.

 

You're probably annoyed at Willow trolls burning your stuff with lighters and torches, and ghosts lighting things on fire. Nerfing the power of fire is absolutely not the way to resolve this problem. There's already a rollback system being implemented to deal with excessive stuff burning. If something ultra-unfortunate should happen, the server owner simply has to reload the previous snapshot, and ban the trolling players.

what if he didn't know someone (or who) did the damage to his world or even already did it? I don't see any reason why we can't nerve the spread effect of torch, lighter and ghost (not the lightning, and my suggestion is only remove the "spread" one, not the main burning machanic/target).

 

in single player, burn your own stuff/world will only harm yourself (except you need a lot of ash/coal, and i doubt you'll need that much and even you are, you can still burn it one by one) but in multi player, it will cause permanent damage to the world especially if you don't know

If the server owner isn't keeping track of what's going on, then the server's future will be bleak and short, regardless of this. There is a suggestion being made to get a server log of people who join. Yes, this is a trust thing to a certain extent. Someone will likely know who. It helps if the well-meaning people on the server tell the owner, then, if he cannot know who did the burning.

 

The problem here is that the fire spawned by lightning is the exact same fire caused by Willow's lighter, torches and ghosts. This would literally require different subdivisions of fire. Also, you are basically suggesting that Willow be nerfed in the most hardcore fashion imaginable. This does NOT solve the problem. It only stigmatizes Willow as a DST character even MORE than she already is. Pardon me, i'm not trying to play Devil's Advocate, but her only strength that makes her a not-Wilson is being able to prepare fiery traps in combat. Removing the ability to spread fire except by lightning not only makes fire trivial, but it makes Willow a trivial, pointless character. You want to obliterate any point of picking Willow as a character just because you have bad experiences with Willow-Trolls.

Sometimes you want to burn down an entire forest (that you created for that purpose. Charcoal farming and all.) I don't want to have to relight it 3 more times just to get a good amount of charcoal.

How about this? If you want to chop down a tree, you have to pick all the leaves off of it, chop each branch off, and then remove the tree one chunk at a time. You'll quickly find that it's far too slow to be worth bothering with.

 

That's how much sense this makes. Burning trees to get charcoal should NOT be a chore. So many things in the game already a chore. Why add another? It's ridiculous.

The problem with that is it makes PvP and any form of farming using Fire unusable.

Lets take PvP for example, you are a Willow and you have set up a devious little trap involving a bunch of newly planted Evergreens and a small path to your location. This is a viable trap in a PvP setting, the Willow would just light that path on fire.

Now lets say that other player is the host, what would stop him from just shutting off that Willows offensive based trap?

 

Now, a non PvP example...

That Willow is going insane, what does Willow do when her sanity drops? Lights **** on fire, whats stopping Willows accidental fires from burning down a forest, which it should do I might add, well, your idea is. Not only would that Willow not suffer from neglecting his/her character, she also wouldn't be able to boost her Sanity by burning down an entire forest.

Last but not least...

Natural Fire, if only the Host can spread fire, then players wouldn't have to worry so much about lightning strikes, or just fire in general.

 

Fire is a very important aspect of Dont Starve. Limiting the ways it spreads severely impacts a players experience while playing, regardless of who started the fire.

 

Remember, we didn't start the flame war....

Its so fun to burn down forests, cmon! :-) The only thing I hate about fire is that Willow poops with fire when has low sanity, omg how much was burnt with this sh*t. :-))) But I like the way fire works, if you want controlled forest fire, chop and dig it around so that between needed to burnt forest and unharmed would be blank ground. It works even in real life by forest fire fighters. And about ppl who just have fun on your server... what can I say, make private game and play with trusted players, its pretty dumb to nerf fire cuz you play with unknown and unreliable ppl that can harm your gameplay.

So for PvP this option would be disabled and everyone would be able to burn your stuff. For random fires it would be disabled as well. You know hosts would sooner or later find out that some Willow wants to burn their farm by standing in the middle of let's say bush farm. Also I didn't say anything about natural causes. Lightning would still be able to create forest fire.

For Dedicated servers it would be disabled. You know some kind of "play at your own risk" thing. This is pretty common among multiplayer games. You know, where official servers have nobody to look after them and don't have any plugins restricting griefing.

@MrNaxeros, what you're suggesting completely throws all logic out the window. Even by DS standards. Why should Willow's fires be any less dangerous than lightning fires? Willow's strength is her ability to do stuff with fire. You are suggesting that we get rid of the only reason to play as Willow, because trolls often play as Willow. This absolutely will not fly.

@Silentdarkness1, welp... my idea is bad then I admit. Then I have another much simpler idea. Just nerf Willow. Make her be like before Strange New Powers update: without random fires and lighter. Let's say the downside would be losing fire immunity while insane. Anyway, I'm out of this topic. 

Guys, sorry but that's how fire works. It spreads, destroys and makes you cry. The source doesn't matter, and this is the most gamey and unreasonable solution I've seen in quite a while.

And also no to nerfing Willow. She's already low on perks. The problem is not Willow, but the capability to make fire(and people who make it). Willow is just a shortcut. And no, I see no decent way to nerf fire destruction without screwing the game. There probably isn't one. So instead of wanting to nerf what's in, suggest ways to revert damage like the rollback and stuff.
