Setting up a dedicated server?

Recommended Posts

I recently got my key and have been playing with a friend of mine. However, there are time when we don't sync up to play and our world is hosted on my computer.

My question is; Is there a way to set up a dedicated server on another computer with an addition key?

Has there been software release that will allow me to do this, or is the only way currently to host while you play.

It is possible to start a game on another computer if you have an extra key. And stop when you are at the character selection screen. Then you can join from your main computer and the 'host' wont be in the game. So its kinda like a makeshift dedicated server. U need an extra key and extra computer though.

I don't think that's been released yet, the only dedicated servers that you see on the list belong to developers currently until it's released to everyone. They are in the pipeline, though!

Noted. Thank you.

Also, where did you get the info? Wondering because I'd like to follow it or possibly read more about it's development.

Darn! Can anyone help me out with this? *Nudge Nudge*.

Actually, it's wrong. Some modders are already testing some Dedicated servers given by Klei. On these, we can do anything we want to. I've also hosted my own dedicated server (Diabu's dedicated Server) on a better machine than the one Klei's gave me.

So they're working on it, we give them feed backs on how we use dedicated, how easy it is manage it, and so on.

That's correct.  We are just ironing out a few more lua crashes, and making the configuration more usable- and then we will roll it out to everyone.

Currently it's far more performant than the base game,  does not require a graphics card, has lower memory consumption, and already works on Windows/Linux.

Any possibility on an ETA? Or, any way I can get Klei to allow me to host my own? I mean, it would be for two people on the same router so I assume I can give good feedback or see if there are any bugs?

I don't really think you need a Dedicated server if you're playing with someone on the same network.

Klei's dedicated server are mainly for online playing. I don't think you can have better performance thanks to Dedicated servers =/
The only difference will be that a dedicated won't shut down when players disconnect

That's what we want :/. We both play, and we enjoy playing together. But, sometimes we just want to play and it sucks having to wait for the other person to want to also. I'd like to just have my 2nd computer just running our world so we can make progress whenever we feel like it instead of 'having' to play at the same time.

Ok, that what I thought. I don't think that Klei needs feedback from this kind of use. Hope it will be available to everyone soon :)

For now, as someone's else said, you may just use another computer as dedicated server, with its own steam account and DST key ;)

Do we know what kind of bandwidth it needs? I have a system available with 48gb RAM, two quad core Xeons, and a raid10 array (ESX server 4.1) that I can easily run a dedicated server on for some testing. My connection is 30Mb down and 3Mb up. I could set it up on a windows or linux instance (any flavor).

Excited to see a dedicated server in the pipeline!

The game takes about 8kb/s per player, with a download spike when someone joins.

Most of our test servers are running on 500mb of ram, which should comfortably host around 8 players.

Getting the servers out is a priority, so it shouldn't be much longer :-)

8 kilobits/s or kilobytes/s? (probably kilobytes, but it doesn't hurt to ask)

And that's the upload bandwidth, right? Do you have a benchmark for the download bandwidth, and for both the download and upload bandwidth used by clients as well?

For a server running @ 30 tick, each client costs approximately:

8 Kilo Bytes per second up

2 Kilo Bytes per second down

so,  an 8 player server would roughly require:

64 Kilo Bytes per second up

16 Kilo Bytes per second down

The amount of data to list the game/ping is negligible.  These statistics vary pretty wildly.  In a simple forest scene a client may only use half that bandwidth,  but in a more complicated scene they may use significantly more.

By default servers run at 15 tick, and consume less bandwidth.

Some figures concerning bandwidth usage on my dedicated:

With 18 players connected , and SSH :

- Incoming: around 450 kBit/s

- Outgoing: around 1 MBit/s

- Memory : 1,15 Gbytes

hey maaan) why did u ban me on ur server?) i'am a noob one done nothing wrong)
