JustA4ever
You could mine coal which could be used to craft something (but not as replacement for charcoal) or as long lasting fuel (let's say twice as long as normal log).
Silentdarkness1
Meh. Maybe make it a common resource that can refill the durability of torches. There's already a zillion choices for fire fuel. Don't need more. I can just rip up turf and fuel a fire with it if I want.

Silentdarkness1
Neither is mining coal. Not to mention, this won't be renewable.

Soner or later we will have caves and this means earthquakes. So at least partialy it would be.

Ridley
I think the less common minerals, the better. Nitre and Moon rocks both take up inventory space or liter the world because they don't have immediate use. Gems are rare in comparison, but no one leaves them suckers lying around. New players might get confused about the use of coal, thinking they use it to build a furnace to cook better meat and refined items. Coal is like health kits in games, seen everywhere and has a common function in most games. When you use things people are used to, but don't use them in obvious ways, you confuse people. Silentdarkness1
Yes, as of the meteor update. Even then, just getting wood to fuel your fires is a better option. Because it's much easier to farm. All you need is an open area, pinecones and a lightning rod.
