Suggestion: In-Game Global Notepad

Recommended Posts

I'd find it really useful to have an in-game global notepad, i.e. viewable and editable by all the players on the server. (Like the notepad in "Tabletop Simulator".)

This would allow us to:

  • Publish a list of to-do tasks (e.g. farm silk, catch bees, plant tree farm). This not only serves as a reminder for all players, it also allows each player to mark on the notepad which task they're taking on at the moment, so that other players are aware that it's already being done. And then they can delete it off the list when they come back with 40 yellow bees.

  • Publish any rules in force (e.g. Telltale Hearts are banned on this server).

  • Publish instructions for noobs (e.g. "DO NOT haunt anything near the base", or "Deposit communal items at base before DCing").

  • Display helpful advice for incoming players (e.g. To find basecamp, follow path to the north, and turn left at Beefalo).

It gets a little tiresome to have to repeat ourselves in chat every time a new player joins, so it would be helpful to have a little notepad / notice board available for everyone to read. It would also help forgetful players to remember what housekeeping chores need doing.

I don't know about a global notepad, that might break the realism of the game a lot. I would be up for a bulletin board structure that you could build that you could post rules or tasks on. I believe they may be implementing that with signs.

I like this idea. A constructible bulletin board would be nice to have in the game, and would make for a neat entrance to servers once the spawn location is locked down (I heard it's random sometimes... correct me if I'm wrong).

In the last couple of Dev streams they've mentioned wanting to implement signs that you can change the message of. You could put a string of signs with messages for newcomers.

One thing that might help with this a fair bit is to be able to see the server name/settings/description while in-game. Maybe also show the server description while loading. I've noticed from having hosted public games that almost nobody reads the description (because mine is usually something like "Testing mods. Expect crashes, regular restarts, and general weirdness." and then people come in asking where the base is. Which is okay, I usually lock them in basalt vaults and spawn in a bunch of frogs, so it's all fun ^_^. But in seriousness it would be nice if the description were more visible/accessible beyond the server list.

This. Like how other game servers have a "message of the day page" or have information on how to donate, vote, etc.

Excellent, that would do the trick! We could build a sign at the spawn point(s) to display rules and directions to base, and a sign in our base for general housekeeping issues. Two notice boards are more fabulous than one!   :encouragement:
