Hudxesonael
As all signs seem to point that PvP will be included in a standard survival game (in contrast to having a PvP mode with different set of rules) it's logical to assume that there will be situations where a theoretically hostile player might be messing in your base while I you're away. Such theft will be easy to perform and really hard to deal with. For a start I am proposing new craftable Chest types that are already in the game but are inaccessible to players in the single player mode. I am talking about the Chests that are part of the Set Pieces - mainly the one from the 'Disused Beefalo Pen Trap' (the one that sets everything on fire after opening) and the one from 'Contagious Rot Trap' (the one that makes all the food in your inventory rot). http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Set_Piece With tools like these we would be able to make someone think twice before trying to take our items. The fire-starting Chest combined with some clever 'room design' and few Gunpowder charges might make short work of a pesky looter. The other one would just make their day more miserable by destroying his inventory food supply. As I said before - this would be a nice addition but I would gladly see more defensive installations. Maybe some Chests less drastic in effect so you won't get you base burnt down with each use. Perhaps a Chest for which you need a key, one bound to your player or just an armoured one. We not only need Chest but also some new traps in general. I am gonna stop spewing out ideas at this point. I want to start a discussion focused exclusively on the 'home defence aspect of the game' in a PvP environment. As pointed out by GalloViking the specially designed contraptions for PvP (including the mentioned, new Chests) ought to be only triggered by other playres to avoid exploitation in the single player mode. GalloViking
The main defense against other players is to play solo: if you're alone, other players won't mind you. That's all from me. mrtwoface
It's a neat idea, but I think everyone is jumping the gun a little bit with all these ideas about PVP considering that PVP hasn't even been mentioned yet by Klei. mrtwoface
https://twitter.com/klei/status/464118734798344192Oh, cool. I guess I was jumping the gun by saying other people were jumping the gun. What does that mean anyway? I think your idea would be good in PVP, even though I don't plan on doing much of it. I think it's important to allow forced attacking of allies for those who want to, and for friendly fire to be on, but anti-player measures will never be enough. In the end, people who are going to grief are going to grief. I don't recommend playing with those people. Advanced chests stuff is a good idea but I don't like it. It also means that monsters trying to steal your stuff like Bearger and Krampus will be affected by it... randompandora
Seems like it could backfire pretty easily and I more agree with those that say play with friends not enemies. jbeetle
Who plays with people they don't enjoy playing with? That's the scenario I see being prepared for in this thread. Hudxesonael
Seems like it could backfire pretty easily and I more agree with those that say play with friends not enemies. Who plays with people they don't enjoy playing with? That's the scenario I see being prepared for in this thread. Well I was assuming that the majority of DS players are mature and understand that people playing the PvP mode (in ANY game) might not necessarily be 'enemies' of the guys that they play against. I know it's hard to grasp by some but you have to belive my words - there are people that don't treat playing this kind of mode personally. In the end, people who are going to grief are going to grief. I don't recommend playing with those people. Since DS has a really limited combat system - the smart thing to do is avoid the clunky, head-on confrontations with a melee weapon and try to hit at the weakest point with minimal resistance. Taking someone's stuff seems to be the right thing to do at their absence. Its seems to be a logical strategy. I wouldn't call it griefing since the assumption is that the actions will take place in a PvP mode. As I stated before: I want to start a discussion focused exclusively on the 'home defence aspect of the game' in a PvP environment. Yes, the PvP environment. Nah, I read everything. Advanced chests stuff is a good idea but I don't like it. It also means that monsters trying to steal your stuff like Bearger and Krampus will be affected by it... Only if the conditions of the game's code are ment to allow it. To be honest that's a good point. I will make a correction in my original post to underline this issue. Thanks for pointing this out. PvP shouldn't really be a focus of Don't Starve Together. I think it's important to allow forced attacking of allies for those who want to, and for friendly fire to be on, but anti-player measures will never be enough. I agree with the main focus of the upcoming expansion but I don't think such addition to the game would take away much of the developers time and energy. I also agree that it woun't be a perfect remedy for protecting yourself from other players and I don't think we need one. Those (for example Chests) would just be tools that would make situations slightly more interesting in a PvP game. Just to clarify. The title of this thread is ment to be a bit controversial and eye-catching (like all good titles) - to all who failed to notice the difference in its tone from the one inside the topic itself.
