I've never really used them myself but a quick search on youtube showed that they could be surprisingly efficient against spider queens and mactusk hunting parties and the wiki says that they are good against the cave worms. Are they good against hound packs, beefalo groups or the clockwork monsters? I'm thinking of some strategy involving running around with a stack of materials for mines, some bug nets and bee hats but before I start to experiment with it I'd like to hear about other people's experiences with that weapon.
