Why do I not have a Steam folder?

Recommended Posts

So what about multiplayer mod? Can I still get it on the Don't starve? Cause I really wanna play with somebody and not on my own cause otherways it's kind of lonely and may be even boring.

Btw what about the caves? What secrets will lurk in them in the future? Will the game become more adventurous and have more horror in it?

Click the link  on the youtube video you linked earlier that says "How to setup" and tell me what it says.

Yes, I got that, I just wasn't sure if the thing was actually real or not and seems not. So I'd really want someone to make a mod with multiplayer, like on minecraft (personally hate minecraft) cause it gets kinda boring that you can get everything with codes and even with mods is quite borong. I'd like it if someone could make a map and then it'd be in a list but you'd need an internet connection for it. It'd be awesome to have 4 player Don't starve game, you know! I'd really like to play Don't starve with other people, but would this actually possible with playing on different PCs and with internet connection? A mod like that?

It's possible because it's been done before, a few times. Each time, it was buggy and a mere shadow of what it could be if Klei did it themselves. That being said, more than likely no one is going to try to make/update a multiplayer mod if they haven't by now. So don't get your hopes up.

Okay I purchased and installed the game. Where do I find my product key?

Oh, it's for some kind of a mod that was automatically in the game I think. I have a mod called The Screech but for some reason it's disabled. It says it's really terrifying! What is it?!

Did you get it via Steam? If so, it should be available under your library. And The Screecher is a mod that the developers themselves wrote. It isn't meant to be "part of" DS, more of a separate entity.

From my earlier post:

Where is my Steam key?

You can get your Steam key from the main menu in Don't Starve by clicking on the "Options" tab and choosing "Account Info".

Humble Store: (Amazon, Paypal, Google)

When you purchase Don't Starve through the Humble Store, you will be sent an email that contains a unique URL that will allow you to claim your game key (that will work with Chrome and Steam) and a download for the Standalone client.

And The Screecher is a short Story mod using the DS engine. Play it and see what happens!

I don't know how to activate mods. I have the screecher disabled, I have a mod folder and all that data but not in a Steam folder.

If you have it on Steam, you definitely have a Steam folder. As for mods, go to the mod section of the forums.

Okay, how do I update my game? Because I need a product key to update it. So where can I find my product key?

About mods, nope can't find ANYTHING that'd tell me how to install them. I can only download them but how do I get them into the game? There's different types so tell me EVERYTHING about how to install them.

Did that, doesn't work. I even removed the mod already in the game, it didn't make any changes and still showed the mod which I took out. It worked for this guy:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Eo5eQpqHYY

But nothing works for me. Well?

It's a thousand, but yea.

What if it's a picture of a million words in a very small font?

Being relevant: You are sure you COMPLETELY uninstalled your pirated version before trying to install a legit version, correct? If there are extra files here and there that take the place of/modify/work around the real files, things won't work correctly.

I did COMPLETELY uninstal the pirated version but I have left the zip folders of it, I'm thinking to delete it, but right now I don't think it affects my legit version if it's uninstalled, does it?

I'll show a video of how I tried to move my mod and how I tried to remove the existing mod. It's like it's the folder for the game but isn't the right one. I also had another Don't starve's folder called Klei in a completely different place but there is no Screecher mod there so I'm assuming it doesn't really affect the game but is necessary and there's not much in that folder. There's only one notepad thing, I think, a file with a cog as an image and one empty folder called Saved (not sure if it was empty or not but if it wasn't there was't much data either).

The easy way to fix this is to convert your standalone version into the Steam version. @Syd said he'd help you with that on the first page.

Well then how do I do it?

You know what this game should have? .dontstarvemod files that would be easier way to get the mods in the game. For example the indie game World of goo which is 5 years old btw has possibility to make custom levels. Those you don't just add to a folder as unzipped folders with data but have a file called goomod. Once you click on it you can add it to the game through gootool program. Once that'sbdone you go into the game and the level is there. Why can't this game's thing be so easy?

Oh btw, how about don't starve mod editor? Sounds good?

There's modding tools you can download on Steam. They're found in the Tools dropdown section in your games libary in the Steam client.

If you still need help redeeming your Steam copy, I can help you. I'll assume you bought the game through the Humble widget on http://www.dontstarvegame.com/blog/humble/buynow.html

First thing's first, if you haven't yet made an account on Steam and downloaded/installed the Steam client, do that first. http://store.steampowered.com/

Once that's done, go to https://www.humblebundle.com/ and create an account using the same email address you bought the game with. After you've done that, go to https://www.humblebundle.com/home and you should see Don't Starve if you expand "Claim Past Purchases" at the top of the page, if it hasn't already been automagically added to your Humble account. If it's not there at all, enter the email you bought the game with into the key resender ( https://www.humblebundle.com/store/keyresender ) and claim it through the email that'll be sent to you.

Don't Starve should now be listed under Widget Purchases. Click on that, and you'll be taken to a page that will display downloads and such, as well as a way to redeem a Steam copy when you expand "Click here for your Steam key". You may need to link your Steam account to Humble to redeem the copy, and if that's the case, do so, then click on "Redeem", and it'll automatically get redeemed on your Steam account, and it'll then be totally accessable from within the Steam client, mods included.

If it instead just gives you a product key, you'll want to copy the key, start up the Steam client, click on "Games" in the top menu, click on "Activate a product on Steam", and paste the key in when prompted.

Syd pretty much Ninjaed what I was replying, but just to be complete, I'm also posting my reply.

If you are confused, Cheerio made a thread How to Install and Use Mods

That pretty much answers it. if you still want the long and detailed reply,:

IF you are running it through Steam, go get the files with your Steam Client using the following link in the client through the Steam Workshop. You don't have to manually extract them. When you click on the Steam workshop button to "download" it, it will  automatically configure it. All you have to do after starting the game is to go to the Mods button and click on the ones who want to activate (you may have to restart the game for it to properly work sometimes when cone and leaving that screen.)

IF however you are NOT using Steam and are using what is known as Standalone (I like to use Standalone instead of loading it through Steam for example,) that has a Klei game updater every time you launch it, THEN that requires you to go to the mod  downloads and manually install mods in your  [installed game path] DontStarve\Mods folder. Just drag and drop/copy the Mod folder(s) into that Mods folder.  (The same thing applies with starting the game, going to the Mods button, clicking the mods to activate/deactivate and possibly having to restart the game when finished and leaving the screen.)
