KidneyBeanBoy
So, with the PS4 version comes a wave of new players, so I thought a guide on stat/resource management and other basics would be necessary.Health:Choose your fights wisely:At the start of the game, two rules come into effect:Don't attack anything larger than a butterfly without knowing it can't hurt you-I've seen an LP where someone tried to attack a swarm of frogs with only an axe. It didn't end well.Spiders are a grey area-If it's relatively close to something you can kite it into if you start to get beat up, and if it's nearby nest is only teir one, you're probably good to go. If you are an expert kiter and you know how, go ahead and beat them up.Stay healed:Though not as vital as the other stats, you should probably keep your health above 1/2 of max. This game does occasionally throw battles at you without warning, so keep on your toes.Don't get careless: Bad things can happen if you get arrogant. For example, killing too many innocent creatures at once can bring a demon to steal your stuff. There are many places that when entering unrpepared can kill you.Hunger:Eat your heart out: Most characters have around 150-200 hunger, and with a berries and carrots healing about 2% of that, You will need to constantly keep your hunger either full or nearly full, or you will have trouble keeping full.Sanity:Cry Over Lost Marbles: Going insane is no laughing matter, as hallucinations will appear that WILL hurt you. You'll probably have trouble getting it back up if you aren't prepared with some sanity-raising items, so try to keep it about 80% of the max by doing happy things.Comfort In The Bizarre: NOTE: INSANITY IS ONLY USEFUL LATER IN THE GAME. Going insane can get you beard hair and nightmare fuel, which is important for getting meta-game items.Other Warnings:Winter Wonderland: Winter comes once every 20-30 days, bringing more monsters and freezing cold your way. Try to craft some warmth-related items. (I recommend a heat stone.)Cave dwelling: If you see a plugged sinkhole, don't open it unless you have these things:-A heck of a lot of torches-Some sanity-raising clothing/items-A good weaponAdventure mode: If you're wandering around and find "Maxwell's Door", that's a portal adventure mode. In adventure mode, you have to collect five things scattered around the world to get to the next level. Do this five times and you "beat" the game. Dying in there will just send you back to your main world, so don't fear dying in there!Charlie: Every night, Charlie will come in the pitch black darkness to kill you. She's OP, and the only way to avoid her is to have a light source at all times during night.Science is the answer: In order to craft new items, you need to be near one of the many research machines. Once you craft them, the recipes are always on hand, but you need one around you in order to make uncrafted items.I hope this helped!(If you see anything I missed, tell me.) Deacon_Blue
Cave dwelling: If you see a plugged sinkhole, don't open it unless you have these things:-A lantern-Some sanity-raising clothing/items-A good weapon You have to go into caves the first time without a lantern to get a lantern. Also switch winter to 20-30 days to avoid getting people confused and surprised by the first winter (on default, at least.) Otherwise, great guide without spoiling and still giving players a sense of what to be aware of. Deacon_Blue
That's the exact same thing the other dude said. I'm pretty sure this guy is an adbot of some sort. They've been posting uselessly on all kinds of threads possibly to establish that there is someone behind the account. For example, killing too many innocent creatures at once can bring a demon to steal your stuff. There are many places that when entering unrpepared can kill you. This advice is the most important,in my opinion. No matter how far you are on the game, you will die if you get arrogant. Great guide. When i try to help a new player,i always end up spoiling something. imsomony
That's the exact same thing the other dude said. I think he (she?) just neglected to use the "quote" button. Good guide! Only thing I can think to add is a bare minimum about crafting tiers. I'm trying to be purposely vague here for the new players (although if you think I failed, PM me, I'll edit this out). Anyway, that was something that confused me at the start, and nearly deterred a friend of mine. She plays games like Minecraft and Terraria (etc) all the time, but simply couldn't figure out *how* to get started. Greig91
Probably obvious but it might be worth noting that it's important to always carry plenty of grass, twigs, wood and flint with you in case you get caught out in the dark and need to quickly build a fire, or if you need to quickly make a basic tool for whatever reason. Also "kiting" regular spiders is extremely easy to do. There's a bit of a delay before they attack you once they enter attack range, and they can be stunlocked with any tool or weapon. A spear kills them in three hits. If there is more than one and they're all close together, like when you provoke a nest, the best way to deal with them is to run away a little, wait for one of them to enter attack range, but then instead of holding attack and hitting it three times to kill it you need to judge whether or not you can land all three attacks before one of the others hit you. If you can't, just hit it once or twice and then run back a bit to start over again. Eventually you'll kill them all without being hit. The one thing you really need to be careful with if you're going after spider nests is that tier 2 nests and above spawn warrior spiders which can jump a reasonably long distance and attack you, so the above tactic wont work on them at all. It's best to just stay away from them if you don't have log armour or better in my opinion, otherwise you'll take too much damage for the reward to be worth it. The warrior spiders are easy to spot as they're covered in yellow stripes. [snip]If you don't kite well or have problems with the warrior spiders, placing multiple traps, emptying them after triggered and repeating until no more spiders pop out is another way.
