Mushrooms in caves?

First real try at surviving in the caves (late to the party, I know) and having some issues with sanity. I found some green mushrooms while I was on a trip to pick up my items after a death, and i wonder, how do they grow back in the caves? There is no rain.... Do they even grow back at all ?

I use pumpkin cookies. Unlike taffy, they have no negative side effects.  In fact, I pretty much save all pumpkins when farming just to make cookies for cave missions. Same with Dragonfruit.

Pierogies are also a nice cave/ruins food - if you keep them in Chester to keep the bunnymen at bay. They have a nice health restore to them and seem to be easier to make than Dragonpie once you have a caged bird.

4 Pierogies, 1 or 2 Dragonpies if I have them, and 3 to 4 Pumpkin cookies and I'm ready for a nice long run in the caves/ruins.

If you're going for meat-based items, get honey ham. the -10 health (40 vs 30)is not worth the 2x hunger loss  (37.5 vs 75) compared to it. Even Honey nuggets with its 10 less  doesn't require additional egg production (but you never make honey nuggets unless you have leftovers anyway.... )

And if you're making Pumpkin cookies, you ARE using a bird and birdcage to selectively get the seeds and grow Pumpkins, right?

I use honey ham big time, but mostly for the way to and from the cave or if I need to sleep.  Pierogies are purely a sort of "health cheat" where I'm trying to have as much health restoration as I can cary.  I'm almost never actually "hungry" in the caves/ruins. Health on the other hand is constantly in danger. Running works, but they do get hits in. And to get allies engaged in battles, you have to risk a hit or two. I go in with ideally 6 each of poultices, salves, and Pierogies. Multiple healing items gives me three "targets" in  inventory for heals during a battle. I'm a bit panicky when I'm running for my life. When I run out or low on healing, it's time to get out of the Ruins and restock back at base.

I did the bird seed thing at first, but now I have 12+ farms and I haven't needed to. I just selectively harvest my farms and never harvest pumpkins or dragonfruit unless I'm gearing up for a cave/ruin mission. I seem to have 3 or 4 naturally over time just doing that. My heart can't take more than three cave runs per game year anyway (one winter and two in summer).

I think pumpkin cookies are too much efford, just munch a taffy and one honey, hp debonus will cancel out with hp bonus, so now they are just like cookies.

What's the trouble? Farms generate pumpkins. One pumpkin, two honey and a twig. Easy. Taffy plus a raw honey is 5 honey, compared to two for the same effect using cookies. Yes, honey is easy to get, but the more efficient you are with resources, the more time you get to explore away from base, rather than returning to base to harvest.

Plus pumpkin cookies taste way better - I LOVE pumpkin. :)

use basic farm plots instead. the grow time it takes while away from the base is small in comparison to the ease of building

And if you really get into stoclpiling stuff for selective farming, I even got to 4 basic and 4 Advanced farms by day 11. if you go that bird in a cage, it makes a very nice farming control...if they ever would spawn the (&*&*(^&*( Dragofruit...oh well, more Pumpkins....

The trouble are pumpkins taking place of my dear dragonfruits.

I'll trade you. :)

Just as I was saying I didn't need the bird to manage seeds, my farms ended up all skewed this last summer.  I have 8 dragonfruits right now and only one pumpkin. I'm feeding it the bird to get seeds to control this better.
